You will be responsible for establishing, developing, and overseeing the effective operation of the Library Learning Commons (which includes the Library Makerspace and Study Rooms), while also teaching essential library, research, and literacy skills to individuals, small groups, and entire classes across all age groups in coordination with the Local Librarian, Secondary Librarian, and Library Assistant(s). Create and maintain an engaging and intellectually stimulating learning space that supports and enhances the school’s educational programs, and procure resources that align with the school’s objectives. Ensure the Library Learning Commons serves as a center for teaching, learning, and community engagement within CIS.
Job Description:
Responsibilities of the Teacher-Librarian:
● Utilize assessment for and as learning within the library program, in accordance with Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools.
● Provide opportunities for critical literacy development.
● Implement CISS policy when selecting learning resources for the library.
● Adhere to protocols if concerns arise regarding controversial or sensitive issues in learning resources.
● Cultivate a warm, inviting atmosphere with flexible spaces that encourage collaborative learning.
● Develop a culturally inclusive and curriculum-relevant selection of materials.
● Ensure that all health, safety, and school policies are integrated into both the physical and virtual library spaces.
● Advocate for the inclusion of assistive technologies and devices within the library.
● Collaborate thoroughly with teachers in the design, delivery, and assessment of programs.
● Explicitly teach transferable skills such as search strategies and resource evaluation.
● Create pathfinders and book lists that support curricular activities.
● Apply the Achievement Chart criteria of Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application to research and inquiry processes.
● Utilize appropriate assessment tools, such as anchor charts, organizers and templates, checklists, rubrics, portfolios, and surveys.
● Instruct students in the use of software and digital applications for learning, collaboration, and the creation of new knowledge as necessary.
● Plan project-based research assignments that provide authentic learning experiences, collaborating with classroom teachers on their implementation.
● Demonstrate models of inquiry/research.
● Design lessons and units around the stages of inquiry.
● Incorporate a gradual release of responsibility in teaching practices.
● Use a skills continuum for research applicable across all grades and subjects.
● Maintain a current and engaging collection across a variety of genres, formats, and levels of complexity.
● Work with CISS Purchasing officers and Storekeepers to order, inventory, and manage all print resources for CIS, including textbooks.
● Ensure avenues for critical literacy that encourage student discussion, reflection, and sharing.
● Organize supplementary reading programs and book clubs.
● Host book fairs and literacy nights for both parents and students.
● Take part in city-wide literacy initiatives and events.
● Include authors and topics that reflect the diversity of the CISS student body.
● Utilize displays, newsletters, school announcements, and online communications to enhance circulation.
● Collaborate with teachers to recommend current and engaging titles for literature circles, class novel studies, and independent student reading.
● Work alongside the secondary teacher-librarian in the CIS library for co-planning and effective resource utilization.
● Provide explicit instruction on the use of online databases, websites for learning, and online collaborative tools.
● Model new presentation tools and software within the library program.
● Align new technologies with student needs and preferences for online collaborative tasks.
● Organize resources for the Library Makerspace.
● Collaborate with STEAM educators to implement best practices in the Library Makerspace.
● Conduct lessons and/or STEAM sessions in the library Makerspace.
● Offer workshops to teachers aimed at enhancing their technological skills.
● Promote free digital resources that broaden learning opportunities.
● Provide orientations for students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
● Present the library program and resources to parents/guardians.
● Seek and maintain partnerships with the local community.
Job Requirements:
