About This Role

ROLE SUMMARY:
Wetherby Kensington is a two-form entry, non-selective, pre-preparatory institution catering to boys from Reception to Year 3. It adheres to the same curriculum and upholds the same values and ethos as Wetherby School, forming a vital component of the Wetherby Group of schools. The boys at Wetherby Kensington benefit from exceptional academic instruction alongside robust pastoral care.

Wetherby Kensington seeks to appoint a dynamic, strategic, and influential Deputy Head - Pastoral and Operations for a one-year maternity cover. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a history of promoting the well-being and development of boys within a high-achieving environment. This exciting opportunity is tailored for an ambitious individual who approaches all young people and staff with calmness and intelligence. This role carries significant responsibilities, requiring a positive influencer with a solid strategy to prioritize the well-being of our young learners. The Deputy Head (Pastoral and Operations) will be integral to the daily operations of the school and will significantly contribute to its strategic growth.

We are in search of a role model for both students and staff, someone who will champion excellence in our boys by implementing a world-class pastoral program. The successful applicant will recommend and introduce innovations based on research and practice in pastoral care, spearhead the development of boys' character and well-being, and ensure the safeguarding and welfare of both the students and staff.

This is a remarkable opportunity for candidates who possess demonstrated leadership and management capabilities within an educational context, and who can collaborate effectively with the Headmistress, the Senior Leadership Team, and other stakeholders to further establish a clear vision, direction, and operational framework for the school.

This position is set to commence in September 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Take charge of the pastoral care of the boys in collaboration with the Head and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Serve as the primary contact for parents, educators, and boys regarding pastoral matters.
- Act as one of the Designated Safeguarding Leads, overseeing the safeguarding of all students in the school, including Prevent and Online Safety.
- Lead and enhance Pupil Voice initiatives, empowering students to advocate for positive changes on issues that are important to them.
- Foster connections with the wider community to ensure all boys can engage in local and broader community events, including competitions.
- Manage the school council by chairing all meetings and executing any proposals that arise.
- Develop and oversee the behavior policy implementation throughout the school.
- Maintain the school’s behavior log, ensuring accurate and current records, with reports provided to the Head and Governors on a termly basis.
- Lead and coordinate the school’s Health and Safety committee meetings, ensuring termly safety walks are conducted and actions are followed up promptly to ensure compliance.
- Undertake a minimum of 60% teaching responsibility across the school.
- Be an active member of the SLT.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- Qualified teacher status with experience in a leadership capacity.
- A strong grasp of school operations, compliance, and pastoral care.
- Experience in managing operational and compliance processes within a busy educational environment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient communication abilities with students, parents, and staff.
- A commitment to upholding high standards across all facets of school life.
- A collaborative spirit, complemented by a good sense of humor and emotional intelligence.
