About This Role

Established in 1961, the International School of Berne was created to cater to the needs of the city's diplomatic community. Over the years, the institution has expanded from a modest enrollment of 40 students to nearly 300, mirroring the growth of international business in the area. Currently, the school also welcomes local families looking for an international education. Although English serves as the official language, it is the first language for less than 40% of the student body, enriching the school’s environment with a diverse linguistic backdrop that includes representatives from 45 different nationalities, thus providing a truly global educational experience.

ISBerne's commitment to international education is central to its development as an International Baccalaureate World School. The school introduced the IB Diploma programme in 1995 and subsequently received authorization to implement the IB Primary and Middle Years Programmes in 2007. Additionally, ISBerne holds accreditations from both CIS and NEASC.

Starting in 2026, ISBerne will introduce an additional Lehr Plan 21 pathway for Grade 1, primarily taught in German. This initiative presents an exciting opportunity for the school to attract more Swiss families and enhances the dual-language approach already in place in the Kindergarten.

In April 2017, the school transitioned to a newly constructed campus in Gümligen, located on the outskirts of Bern, after spending 55 years in its previous location. The relocation was positively received by the local community. The design of the campus reflects the school’s dedication to fostering community, featuring interconnected learning spaces that celebrate both diversity and shared values.

ISBerne primarily serves a transient expatriate demographic, with families typically residing in Switzerland for an average duration of three and a half years. This frequent turnover contributes to a close-knit environment, allowing the school to serve as a true home away from home for students and their families during their time in Switzerland.

The International School of Berne is a part of Pansophic Learning, an educational organization that aims to provide exceptional learning solutions to students and educators, enabling them to achieve their academic and life goals, irrespective of geographic, financial, or demographic factors. The organization is committed to the belief that every child should have the opportunity to pursue their aspirations, regardless of their birthplace. Headquartered in Virginia, USA, Pansophic Learning operates globally, with schools in the Middle East, the UK, and Europe.

The Board of Directors is in search of a Director to lead the school starting in January or August 2027. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in international school leadership, a genuine passion for holistic education, and the capacity to inspire and unify the school community. Candidates should possess relevant qualifications and current knowledge and experience with the IB programme. Attributes such as intercultural sensitivity, strong ethical character, and a commitment to fostering a culture of trust are also essential.
