About This Role

The Guernsey Music Service invites applications for the position of Head of Strings, effective September 2026. We are looking for a seasoned, energetic, and well-qualified individual who can lead our String Department and actively contribute to the ethos and identity of our Service.

The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching upper strings (violin and viola) across primary, secondary, and post-16 levels, guiding students from beginner to diploma levels. You will inspire and motivate young musicians in diverse settings while leading our team of string instructors under the oversight of the Head of Service. A solid understanding of the role of instrumental tuition within the school music curriculum is essential, along with a demonstrated commitment to music within the broader community of the Island.

In addition to high teaching and learning standards, the successful candidate will possess the experience and skill to teach in a whole-class setting, delivering our engaging and inclusive general musicianship program that heavily incorporates the Kodaly method. You will also be capable of conducting individual and small group instrumental lessons, directing orchestras, and leading ensembles, including string quartets and our Youth Orchestra at our vibrant Music Centre.

This position offers a fantastic opportunity to join a dedicated group of educators within a well-established Service known for its high standards and low staff turnover. Our Service plays a crucial role in the cultural landscape of the Island, maintaining excellent relationships with both national and international institutions. Each week, approximately 800 pupils participate in the Centre’s activities, which include 7 orchestras, 7 bands, 6 choirs, and numerous other chamber and feeder groups. Most Music Centre rehearsals occur on Saturdays, and teachers are expected to work from Tuesday to most Saturdays during term time. Instrumental lessons for older students typically take place outside of curriculum hours, and teachers will need to travel between schools during the school day with any necessary instruments and equipment.

The ideal candidate will exemplify strong communication and organizational skills, fostering productive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. A full and distinctive contribution to the work of the Service is expected.

This position offers a competitive salary as well as access to a pension scheme.

For those candidates who would need to relocate to the Bailiwick of Guernsey, we provide a relocation package to assist with the costs associated with the move. This package offers various options tailored to individual circumstances.

Further details can be found in the Relocation Directive below.

This role also grants off-Island candidates an 8-year Long Term Employment Permit (refer to details below). This permit allows candidates to bring immediate family members who will be permitted to work on the Island across all sectors. Additionally, there are excellent schools available for those considering relocating with their families.
