Kumamoto International School is an IB World School offering both the Diploma Programme and the Primary Years Programme.

We are seeking a qualified individual to fill a dual position:

50% College Counselor - Assisting students with university applications, facilitating our Future Focus Program, and guiding them in their educational and career planning.

50% English Teacher (L&L / Language Acquisition) - Instructing English, offering language assistance, and providing targeted support for students in Grades 6-12 (MYP and DP).

This role is perfect for someone who:

Possesses substantial experience in college counseling, especially with international university admissions.

Is familiar with the intricacies of IB Diploma Programme admissions as well as non-IB options (SAT, TOEFL, etc.).

Has a passion for teaching L&L and aiding diverse language learners.

Aims to profoundly influence students' futures, both academically and in career readiness.

Excels in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.

Has a PROVEN track record of achieving outstanding educational results for their students.

Our mission is straightforward:

To establish a world-class educational institution while enjoying the journey.

We believe in putting in the effort and having fun together, fostering a deep appreciation among all members of the school community for what we are building.

About Kumamoto International School

Kumamoto International School (KIS) is situated in Kumamoto, on the Island of Kyushu in western Japan. KIS holds accreditation as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.

Our preschool division, Picasso, began in 2003, followed by our primary school division in 2018. Our junior high school opened its doors in April 2023, and we are excited about our new, larger campus and building for our primary, junior high, and high school divisions, which is set to open in April 2025. As a developing school, there are ample opportunities for advancement as we expand our divisions and grade levels.

Are we the right match?

You:

Are you eager to join a smaller school where you can grow alongside it?

Are you dedicated to providing outstanding educational results for students?

Do you want to be part of a school that aligns with your commitment to excellence?

Would you like to reside and work in a smaller Japanese city (~750,000 residents) that offers a high quality of life and a lower cost of living compared to Japan's major urban areas?

Do you prefer the idea of walking or biking to work rather than enduring a crowded train commute?

Are you interested in working at a growing institution that provides numerous opportunities for advancement in various roles?

Do you aspire to be a “change agent” who will positively transform the lives of the students you teach?

Would you value being mentored on your journey to becoming the best educator possible?

Do you appreciate being part of a collaborative team focused on achieving excellent educational outcomes for students?

Do you hold respect for Japanese culture, values, traditions, and perspectives?

Do you wish to avoid feeling like just another cog in a large organization?

Us:

We are committed to continuous improvement in our pursuit of being the leading international school in Japan.

We believe that one exceptional teacher is equivalent to three average teachers.

Our goal is to cultivate a close-knit team of professionals dedicated to the highest educational outcomes for our students.

We believe that one outstanding educator can leave a lasting impact on their students' lives.

We fully support our teachers to enable them to perform at their best.

We mentor our educators to become master teachers who change the lives of their students.

Surrounded by one of Japan's three most renowned castles, Kumamoto offers an exceptional quality of life: clean air and water, beautiful weather (over 300 sunny days annually), and easy access to stunning natural landscapes. If you cherish nature and outdoor activities, Kumamoto will be a perfect fit. The active volcano, Mt. Aso, is just an hour away, while Osaka is a mere three hours by direct bullet train, making weekend trips convenient. Thanks to local farmers, fresh produce and meat are readily available and affordable, often at half the cost found in Tokyo!

Since our inception 22 years ago with Picasso Preschool, we have grown to a total of 60 staff across all divisions. Our goal is to recruit outstanding personnel and build a dynamic team. Our philosophy is to hire dedicated, kind individuals rather than trying to teach niceness and hard work. Many of our long-serving Japanese staff members have been with us for 20 years or more, and several teachers have been here for over a decade. Staff often socialize outside of school, and the institution serves as an excellent foundation for acclimating to Japan and forming friendships. We prioritize staff unity and cooperation, ensuring that help is always available when needed. You will never feel like just another part of a large organization. Additionally, there are significant opportunities for teachers to advance their careers by acquiring new skills and taking on new responsibilities as the school grows.

To assist our teachers in adjusting to life in Japan, we offer complimentary Japanese language lessons on campus.

Our school environment is vibrant, positive, and energetic. We encourage only those educators who are enthusiastic about contributing to such a culture to apply! If this sounds like you, you’ll thrive here!
