About This Role

Are you eager to become part of a team focused on creating a leading IB school in one of the most picturesque cities in Japan?

Kumamoto International School (KIS) is an accredited IB World School that offers both the Diploma Programme (DP) and the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We are currently seeking a qualified ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE teacher for our PYP and MYP programs. The ideal candidate will excel in a collaborative, team-oriented setting and should have a demonstrated history of achieving exceptional educational outcomes at the Junior High and High School levels.

Our mission is straightforward: to provide a world-class educational experience while enjoying our journey together. We strive to cultivate an environment where every member of our school community takes pride in contributing to our shared vision.

About Kumamoto International School:

Situated in Kumamoto on Kyushu Island in western Japan, KIS is a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Our preschool, Picasso, was launched in 2003, followed by the opening of our primary school in 2018, and the initiation of our junior high school in April 2023. We are excited about our new, spacious campus for our primary, junior high, and high school divisions, set to open in April 2025. As we expand, there will be numerous opportunities for career advancement as we introduce additional divisions and grade levels.

Are we the right fit for you?

You:

  • Prefer a smaller school environment where you can grow alongside the institution.
  • Are committed to achieving outstanding educational results for your students.
  • Seek a school that reflects your dedication to excellence.
  • Desire to live and work in a smaller Japanese city (~750,000 residents) that offers a high standard of living and lower expenses compared to Japan's major urban areas.
  • Appreciate the convenience of walking or biking to work rather than dealing with crowded public transportation.
  • Want to be part of a developing school that offers various growth opportunities in diverse roles.
  • Aspire to be a “change agent,” making a positive impact on your students' lives.
  • Value the opportunity for coaching to enhance your teaching abilities.
  • Enjoy collaborating with a team that strives for exceptional educational outcomes for students.
  • Respect Japanese culture, values, traditions, and perspectives.
  • Prefer to avoid feeling like just another employee in a large organization.

Us:

  • Are dedicated to continuous improvement as we aim to be the premier international school in Japan.
  • Believe that one outstanding teacher can have a greater impact than several average ones.
  • Work to build a close-knit team of professionals committed to achieving the best educational outcomes for our students.
  • Recognize that a great teacher can profoundly influence their students' lives.
  • Provide steadfast support to our teachers, enabling them to excel in their roles.
  • Mentor our educators to become master teachers who positively transform the lives of their students.

Kumamoto, known for its magnificent castle, offers exceptional living conditions with clean air and water, beautiful weather (over 300 sunny days per year), and easy access to breathtaking natural scenery. Nature lovers will find plenty to adore in Kumamoto. The active volcano Mt. Aso is just an hour away, and Osaka is a mere three hours by direct bullet train, making weekend getaways simple and convenient. The region's farmers supply fresh produce and meat at prices substantially lower than those in Tokyo.

Since our establishment 22 years ago with the Picasso Preschool, we have grown to a team of 60 staff members across all divisions. Our goal is to attract exceptional talent and build a strong team. Our philosophy is clear: we hire dedicated, kind individuals rather than attempting to teach people to be nice and hardworking. Our longest-serving Japanese staff members have been with us for 20 years, and many other teachers have.
