OBJECTIVES
The Deputy Head of the College will play a vital role within the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), working in close partnership with the Master, the Bursar, and other SLT members. Reporting directly to the Master, the individual in this position will be responsible for overseeing the pastoral care of students, facilitating professional development for staff, organizing school events and trips, and performing additional tasks as delegated by the Master.
This role will require active participation in the school's strategic planning efforts, maintaining a prominent presence within the Wellington community, and fostering key relationships and strategies that promote educational excellence. The Deputy Head will also be pivotal in championing the school and its events through effective communication, collaboration, and innovation. A strong commitment to independent, determined, and professional behavior that reflects the Wellington Identity and Values will be essential. The Deputy Head must effectively engage with the Wellington community, including both academic and non-academic staff, Governors, parents, extended families, and external stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPPORT THE MASTER WITH STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL MATTERS
- Assist the Master in defining the strategic direction of the school and provide leadership in managing the priorities outlined in the School Development Plan.
- Support the Master in ensuring that the school’s vision is clearly articulated, shared, understood, and implemented by all members of the community. Model the school's vision and values in daily activities, inspiring others to contribute to a collective culture and positive environment.
- Collaborate with the Master to establish, evaluate, and refine the school’s goals, objectives, and policies.
- Work with the SLT to develop positive solutions that promote diversity, dignity, and equality throughout all community interactions.
- Aid the Master in complying with legislation relevant to the school’s operations, especially regarding health and safety and employment rights.
- Enforce the school’s behavior, reward, and disciplinary policies; guide the pastoral leader in the daily management of behavior among staff and students; advise the Master on disciplinary concerns and provide informal support to staff as needed.
- Organize agendas and reports for Academic Sub-committee meetings.
- Fulfill any other professional responsibilities of the Deputy Head of the College as reasonably assigned by the Master.
LEADERSHIP
- Serve as an instructional leader, ensuring the ongoing improvement of pastoral care, safeguarding, and enrichment throughout the community.
- Supervise various departments within the College, including, but not limited to, the Safeguarding and Pupil Support Lead, CPD Coordinator, Director of Ed-tech, Head of Music department, and Head of PE department.
- Guide the CPD coordinator in delivering strategic leadership for CPD across the school, enhancing offerings and building capacity through effective training, mentoring, and coaching in alignment with the school’s strategic goals.
- Collaborate with Heads of School to create the school calendar, term diary, and academic induction program, including planning term dates and relaying information to parents. Take overall responsibility for school events, educational trips, extracurricular activities, and special occasions such as the Summer Fair, EdFest, School Musical, and Graduation.
- Work in partnership with the Master, Bursar, and Safeguarding and Pupil Support Lead to develop risk awareness and ensure the implementation of effective health and safety policies and procedures across the college, complying with all WCC safeguarding standards.
- Collaborate closely with the Admissions and Marketing department to create effective and innovative strategies for pupil recruitment.
