The Qikiqtani School Operations with the Nunavut Department of Education is on the lookout for passionate and community-oriented school leaders who are dedicated to creating supportive learning environments for students in Nunavut. As the Vice Principal, your role will involve enhancing instructional leadership and promoting a positive, inclusive school atmosphere. Collaborating closely with the Principal, you will cultivate strong connections with students, staff, families, and community partners. Your efforts will focus on student achievement, fostering culturally responsive learning settings rooted in Inuit Societal Values, and advancing key school priorities including literacy, inclusion, and student well-being. Attributes such as resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness (Qanuqtuurniq) are highly valued in this role and in life in the North.

About the School
Attagoyuk Ilisavik is located in the scenic community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, serving approximately 250 students in grades 6 to 12 with a dedicated staff of 30. The school and its community have a deep-rooted connection to Inuit culture and history.

Required Qualifications

Education & Certification
• Bachelor of Education degree
• Valid teaching certificate recognized by, or eligible for certification in Nunavut (Internationally educated teachers lacking a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials evaluated through Pathways to Teach Canada)

Experience
• Minimum of 2 years in a formal or informal school leadership role (e.g., Vice-Principal, department head, instructional coach, or teacher-leader)
• At least 5 years of experience as a classroom teacher

Core Leadership Competencies
• Proven commitment to nurturing a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive school environment that supports the well-being of both students and staff.
• Demonstrated capability in supporting instructional leadership alongside the principal, focusing on literacy development and inclusive teaching practices.
• Experience in driving instructional improvement through coaching, professional learning communities (PLCs), and utilizing student achievement data to promote student success.
• Ability to establish and uphold positive, respectful relationships with students, staff, families, and community members, especially within northern and cross-cultural settings.

Assets and Preferred Experience

Language and Cultural Assets
• Proficiency in Inuktitut (both verbal and written).
• Experience in promoting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit-based education.
• Familiarity with supporting bilingual and ESL programs.

Instructional Leadership
• Advanced training in education at the graduate level.
• Proven history of fostering positive school-wide behavior and learning environments (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports).

School Operations & Systems
• Experience in implementing operational directives and departmental requirements, including collaboration with the District Education Authority (DEA) and Regional School Operations (RSO).
• Background in supporting site-specific school operations, such as scheduling, supervision, student support processes, or contributing to school improvement planning.
• Exposure to school-based budgeting or resource management, aiding in fiscally responsible decision-making under the Principal's guidance.

Compensation and Benefits
• Salary Range (Certified Vice-Principal): from $108,201 prorated/annum to $157,970 prorated/annum.
• Nunavut Northern Allowance for Pangnirtung, Nunavut: $19,077 prorated/annum.
• Subsidized Housing: Available, although sharing may be necessary.

Conditions of Employment
• Current employees of the Government of Nunavut must possess a valid Nunavut teaching certificate.
• Candidates from outside Nunavut must submit a current public-school teaching certificate from a Canadian jurisdiction recognized by the Nunavut Department of Education. Applications lacking this documentation will not be considered.
• Principals and Vice Principals must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility as a Nunavut Principal within three years of employment.
