Reporting to: Chief Administrative Officer
Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa is currently seeking a full-time permanent School Principal. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing administrative and leadership support for K-12 Education, which encompasses the development, updating, planning, and execution of educational programs.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Foster a sense of community within the school environment, actively engaging students, staff, parents, community members, Mayor and Council, and external organizations in the school’s programs.
- Conduct an annual review of the Strategic Plan for Education and make necessary revisions.
- Create and implement annual work plans along with associated budgets for the school and its various initiatives.
- Organize and lead educational meetings with diverse stakeholders, such as the community, staff, First Nations Schools Association, First Nation Education Steering Committee, and other governmental bodies.
- Participate in the development and ongoing assessment of comprehensive curricula across all education and training levels.
- Ensure the establishment of a safe and nurturing atmosphere that promotes well-being while upholding respectful and responsible conduct throughout the school.
- Promote a collaborative team approach, valuing each team member’s contributions, encouraging full participation, and recognizing staff efforts.
- Solicit and provide constructive feedback to the team; focus on building capacity.
- Oversee and manage the daily operational activities of the school and staff in line with the Collective Agreement.
- Allocate staff as necessary to ensure timely completion of special projects.
- Monitor school programs and initiatives, taking corrective measures when required to guarantee the efficient use of financial, human resources, and capital assets.
- Collaborate with internal departments to fulfill reporting deadlines and compliance requirements.
- Prepare reports for funding agencies related to financial support for programs and activities.
- Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned within the scope of the role.
Education, Experience, Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in education or a related field, paired with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, which includes 3 years of classroom teaching in adult basic skills and 2 years of supervisory experience; or a suitable combination of experience and training that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role.
- Principal certification and/or a commitment to obtaining Principal’s certification.
- A current BC Teacher's Certificate in good standing and at least five (5) years of experience in a related area.
- A solid understanding of First Nations adult and post-secondary education, as well as First Nations issues in BC.
- Familiarity with Ministry Curriculum and Assessment Documents.
- Experience within a First Nation educational context with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
- Knowledgeable about government policies, programs, and curricula.
- Strong organizational capabilities and the ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
- A valid BC driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- A current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening, is required as a condition of employment.
