About This Role

Job Title: Head of Biology (HOD)

Reports to: Academic Centre

Supervises: FCs, Technicians & Teachers in Department

Executive Summary:

In alignment with the school's mission, vision, and strategic objectives, the Head of Biology serves as the leader and coordinator for curriculum development in the subject area, ensuring the highest quality of teaching.

Core Mission:

1. Define the Department's vision and steer its development trajectory.

2. Conduct diagnostics while providing effective academic and instructional leadership.

3. Oversee the quality of the curriculum and evaluate individual courses.

4. Comprehend the broader development goals of the school and make decisions accordingly.

Specific Responsibilities:

Leadership

1. Formulate departmental improvement strategies and monitor their execution, establishing targets as needed.

2. Facilitate the recruitment and onboarding of high-caliber teachers within the department.

3. Represent the department in meetings, contributing to relevant school policy formulation and execution.

4. Supervise the work of Faculty Coordinators, offering guidance and training as required.

5. Take the lead on Health & Safety protocols in laboratories and during experiments.

Teaching and Learning

1. Promote the professional development of teachers, collaborating with PD Leads within the school and external providers to offer methods and platforms that foster teacher growth.

2. Implement the school's performance management framework and conduct effective reviews of teacher performance.

3. Establish common standards of practice, encouraging the exchange of effective practices within the department to enhance teaching and learning methodologies.

Curriculum and Assessment

1. Lead the development of the subject curriculum and coordinate resource sharing within the field, establishing unified standards.

2. Supervise the assessment processes for the subject, ensuring that results reporting aligns with agreed-upon standards and is timely.

3. Ensure that assessments are accurate, moderated, and adequately prepare students for examinations.

4. Provide developmental feedback to students that is sufficiently thorough and frequent to promote progress.

5. Analyze examinations (including CIE and internal exams) and incorporate findings into the department's development plan.

6. Collaborate with Division (Year) Leaders to ensure departmental staff effectively identify and assist students who are underperforming.

Other Duties

1. Formulate a reasonable department budget and implement it effectively.

2. Oversee technicians, ensuring that relevant standards are upheld.

3. Work in partnership with Division (Year) Leaders for the seamless delivery of the subject at the division level.

4. Record department staff attendance, submit it to the registrar, and assign cover staff for sick leave or other types of leave.

5. Undertake any other reasonable duties as assigned by the school.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
