About This Role

The Hamilton International School is on the lookout for a skilled and energetic Assistant Head of Primary: Teaching & Learning to deliver strategic and operational guidance throughout the Primary phase.

This position is crucial for maintaining exceptional teaching standards, curriculum consistency, effective assessment methods, and robust student advancement within our American curriculum framework.

Reporting directly to the Head of Primary, the Assistant Head: Teaching & Learning will spearhead instructional enhancement, curriculum synchronization, data-driven advancements, and professional development, while assisting teachers, students, and families to achieve exceptional results.

The position entails a 50% commitment to teaching and a 50% focus on leadership.

Key Responsibilities


Guide and exemplify high-quality teaching and learning practices within the Primary phase.


Champion curriculum alignment with AERO standards and the school's defined scope and sequence.


Manage assessment practices, encompassing MAP, internal benchmarks, and moderation.


Track student progress and facilitate targeted instructional support.


Conduct learning walks, observations, coaching, and cycles of professional feedback.


Create and implement professional development opportunities aligned with the school’s improvement goals.


Oversee Primary Subject Leads and provide support to Grade Level Leaders.


Collaborate closely with the Assistant Head of Early Childhood to ensure seamless continuity and progression.


Participate in strategic planning, accreditation, and adherence to ISP, NEASC, and MoEHE standards.


Serve as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) for the Primary phase.


Foster a positive, inclusive school environment with high educational expectations.


Maintain effective communication with parents about curriculum and student progress.


Demonstrate and teach exemplary classroom practices.

Essential Qualifications & Experience


Bachelor's degree accompanied by a recognized teaching qualification.


At least 3 years of leadership experience in a Primary or elementary environment.


Demonstrated success in leading teaching and learning initiatives, curriculum development, and assessment.


Experience in coaching educators and leading professional development.

Knowledge & Skills


Deep understanding of effective pedagogy and curriculum design in Primary education.


Familiarity with utilizing student performance data (e.g., MAP) to foster improvement.


Proven capability to lead and cultivate subject and instructional teams.


Outstanding communication, organization, and leadership abilities.


High proficiency in ICT, including Student Information Systems and assessment tools.


Experience with an American or American-international curriculum is preferred.
