Kohl’s School, a prominent First Nation educational institution, serves over 70 students from Junior Preschool to Grade 12. In response to the introduction of middle school programming at Heart Lake First Nation, we seek a full-time teacher for Language Arts (Grades 6-9) and Senior High English. Our curriculum is Alberta Accredited and deeply enriched with First Nation language, culture, traditions, values, and morals. Position Summary:
Kohl’s School is searching for a passionate and skilled English Language Arts Teacher (Grades 6–9) who will also teach some Senior High coursework as part of a collaborative and high-achieving teaching team for the 2026–2027 academic year. The successful candidate will possess a thorough understanding of the Alberta English Language Arts Programs of Study and will help students refine their literacy skills, critical thinking, and effective communication. The teacher will encourage critical literacy, creative expression, and meaningful engagement with a wide variety of texts while collaborating with colleagues to align with the educational objectives of Heart Lake First Nation.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead Powerful Learning
- Design both short- and long-term English Language Arts curriculum plans that correspond with Alberta Programs of Study and the Virtual Learning System.
- Create and implement engaging, inquiry-based, and concept-driven learning experiences that connect students with diverse literary, informational, and media texts.
- Provide explicit instruction in reading comprehension strategies, writing processes, oral communication skills, and critical literacy.
- Assist students in developing their voice, clarity, and precision in both written and oral communication.
- Integrate diverse texts and viewpoints to promote inclusion, empathy, and global awareness.
- Adapt instruction to meet the varied needs and learning profiles of students, including interventions and enrichment opportunities.
- Utilize a range of formative and summative assessment techniques to evaluate literacy skills, critical thinking, and communication.
- Analyze student work and assessment data to inform instructional decisions and foster student growth.

Build Strong Relationships & A Respectful Classroom Environment
- Establish a positive classroom culture grounded in respect, belonging, curiosity, and high expectations.
- Support students’ well-being, confidence, perseverance, and language development throughout their educational journey.
- Implement consistent classroom organization and management practices that promote engagement, safety, and learning.
- Maintain clear, respectful, and professional communication with students and their families.
- Build strong partnerships with families to support student learning and success.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Education;
- Eligibility for or possession of an Alberta Teaching Certificate or Alberta Interim Teaching Certificate;
- Strong proficiency in English communication, both written and oral;
- Valid first-aid certification or a willingness to obtain certification;

Preferred Assets:
- Experience in teaching English Language Arts at the middle or secondary level;
- Familiarity with First Nation traditions and culture;
- Background in inquiry-based and concept-driven teaching methods;
- Proven experience using instructional technology to enhance literacy learning;
