About This Role
GEMS American Academy in Qatar is on the lookout for a passionate and talented individual to join our SENCO team.
The successful applicant will commence their role in August 2026.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote and uphold the principles and high standards set forth in the GEMS Core Values.
- Deliver the assigned curriculum effectively, demonstrating a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the subject.
- Create and present stimulating lessons that motivate students. Develop and use appropriate resources and classroom environments to cater to diverse learning styles.
- Provide written evidence of lesson planning and preparation as needed. Keep detailed records of curriculum and yearly plans, attendance, teaching materials, assessment methods, and more.
- Follow GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct consistently.
- Teach assigned students based on their individual needs, using appropriate teaching strategies that suit their learning requirements and abilities, including late-entry students, ESL learners, students with lower academic performance, and gifted individuals.
- Assign and assess student work. Document and report on students' academic progress, using this information to adapt the curriculum to meet individual needs.
- Show competence in utilizing media and technology effectively in the classroom.
- Support the overall development and well-being of students by providing educational guidance.
- Communicate with external stakeholders when necessary, such as Ministry of Education officials.
- Engage in performance reviews and management, along with Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- Collaborate with team members to create and improve teaching materials, resources, courses, and pastoral care strategies.
- Take part in, and lead when appropriate, co-curricular and extracurricular activities at the school. Build positive working relationships through active leadership and sharing of ideas, resources, and experiences.
- Supervise and ensure appropriate student behavior. Develop and implement strategies to encourage self-discipline and manage disruptive behavior.
- Promote cultural awareness and understanding while instilling a love for learning.
- Assist in organizing and planning school events and functions, such as inter-house competitions, concerts, school plays, and prize days.
- Maintain regular communication with parents, advocating for the GEMS philosophy and core values, while keeping them informed of their children's progress and respecting confidentiality regarding student information.
- Demonstrate initiative and dedication, willing to extend work hours as needed to meet responsibilities.
- Attend staff meetings and participate in committees as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by direct and indirect supervisors.
Ideal candidates should:
- Embodiment and modeling of our core values: respect, innovation, leadership, purpose, and tenacity.
- Hold a B.Ed or a Bachelor’s degree in EAL/ELL or Special Needs Education, along with a PGCE/PGDE or an equivalent Level 5 teaching qualification.
- Be knowledgeable about ICT applications in educational contexts to enhance teaching and learning.
- Be a committed educator with strong subject expertise in relevant fields and a firm commitment to teaching and learning.
- Possess excellent communication skills, capable of building relationships with students and colleagues, contributing positively to the wider school community.
- Have a minimum of 2 years' teaching experience in the relevant subject area or age group.
