About Thornhill Academy
Thornhill Academy is a vibrant 11-16 secondary school with over 600 students, located close to Sunderland City Centre. We are proud of our diverse community, where students represent 14 ethnicities and speak 35 languages. Our uniqueness lies in this diversity, and we celebrate it every day.

The Role - Head of Year
We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, passionate, and highly organised Head of Year to join our pastoral team. This is a key role within the academy, where you will:
- Lead and inspire a year group, fostering high expectations, positive attitudes, and a strong ethos of achievement.
- Oversee the academic progress, attendance, behaviour, and wellbeing of pupils within the year group.
- Lead and support a team of Form Tutors, providing guidance and celebrating successes.
- Build strong relationships with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure pupils are fully supported.
- Play a key role in whole-school initiatives, assemblies, and events.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people.
What Weโre Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
- Supportive of our ethos and values, with a commitment to excellence and equity.
- Self-motivated, organised, and an excellent communicator.
- Able to motivate and inspire young people to reach their full potential.
- Skilled in building positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Knowledgeable about safeguarding and experienced in supporting young people.
Experience of working with young people, families, and external agencies is essential. Experience with SIMS/CPOMS and leading assemblies is desirable but not essential.
