About This Role

Join us in Madrid as a Science and A-Level Biology Teacher.

In this role, you will instruct students in general science at KS3 and IGCSE levels, along with A-Level biology, at a school that prioritizes scientific education. Experience the benefits of small class sizes, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a dedicated team that values the subject. Our graduates frequently pursue Medicine, Engineering, and Biomedical Sciences at prestigious universities throughout Europe and the UK.

Holy Mary is an independent British Catholic school established in Madrid in 2009. We operate independently, meaning that decisions are made locally rather than dictated by a corporate office. This structure allows for reduced bureaucracy and greater freedom in teaching methodologies.

Why choose Madrid?

Madrid stands out as one of Europe's most dynamic cities. With approximately 300 sunny days a year, a fantastic culinary scene, exceptional public transport, and a cost of living that is considerably lower than other capitals like London or Dublin, it offers a remarkable quality of life. The city boasts a lively international community, convenient flights to many European capitals, and an appeal that keeps many educators who initially plan to stay for just a year, opting to remain for decades.

What we provide:

• Salary: 34,000 — 42,000 EUR gross/year (dependent on qualifications and experience).

• Contract: Permanent from the outset (‘contrato indefinido’ per Spanish labor law).

• Professional development: Annual CPD program, sponsored training, and chances to spearhead departmental initiatives.

• A comprehensive relocation and benefits package for international applicants (details to be discussed during the interview).

• Visas & paperwork: Full assistance with work permits and navigating local bureaucracy — we assist throughout the process and cover any related costs.

Why choose Holy Mary?

We are not a corporate entity nor part of a network of schools spanning multiple continents. Our family-oriented school was founded by educators and operates on familial values.

What does this mean for you?

• You will be recognized as an individual, not just a number. Our headteacher knows each teacher personally. Decisions are made through dialogue, not impersonal HR systems.

• Students are eager to learn, class sizes are small, parental support is strong, and behavior is commendable (most days!).

• Community is essential. We celebrate our achievements together, support one another, and uphold the unique culture that makes our school exceptional.

• Our Catholic identity is integral to our mission. It influences our community, values, and interpersonal relationships. We welcome staff from diverse cultures and backgrounds who resonate with these principles.

What we seek:

• QTS, PGCE, B.Ed, or a comparable teaching qualification.

• A degree in biology or a closely related discipline.

• Experience teaching IGCSE science and A-Level biology.

• A genuine passion for the subject and a commitment to fostering student success.

• A dedication to safeguarding and child welfare.

• We welcome British, EU, and international candidates — assistance with visa applications is provided.

Preferred qualifications: Experience in a British international school; familiarity with Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel exam boards. However, if you are an exceptional science educator, we encourage you to apply regardless of these additional preferences.

Application process:

Please send your CV and a brief cover letter to vacancies@holymary.es, detailing your interest in Holy Mary and what you can contribute to our science department.

We evaluate applications on a rolling basis and conduct interviews promptly. Top candidates may receive offers before the application closing date.

Holy Mary British Catholic School is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All positions are contingent upon enhanced DBS and/or relevant police checks.
