Brief Description of SCIE

We are a UK curriculum high school (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE) instructing primarily Chinese students in English as they prepare for international universities.

Since 2025, we have offered an AP stream, thus providing opportunities for teachers interested in teaching various AP subjects.

The College's mission is to educate students in a challenging international atmosphere, fostering academic excellence, social responsibility, creativity, independence, and enthusiasm, ultimately preparing them for future opportunities.

• Highly selective admissions, including English and Mathematics tests.

• Instruction and communication are conducted in AS/AL English, with students typically at first language proficiency, many studying AS/AL English language or literature at A1/A2 levels.

• Over 1800 students, exclusively in high school – covering UK Key Stages 4 & 5.

Subject Department Introduction:

The Biology department consists of 14 enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers along with 4 committed technicians. We have 9 specialized Biology labs, including a cutting-edge genetic engineering lab (this year, SCIE students won the Grand Prize at the iGEM competition).

Teachers handle various year groups, from IGCSE (UK years 10 and 11) to Cambridge AS and A Levels (UK years 12 and 13), as well as AP Biology. Biology is a popular choice, with about one-third of students opting for it at the AS level. Many students pursue Biology-related fields at prestigious universities worldwide, securing placements in Biology, Biochemistry, or Natural Sciences at institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, and Ivy League universities. For the 2024-25 academic year, around 35 A2 Biology students applied for Oxbridge courses, receiving extensive expert support throughout their application process from our teachers.

We seek a dedicated Biology teacher with substantial experience across all year groups, who brings enthusiasm, flexibility, and a commitment to hands-on practical work. Experience in preparing students for pre-university levels and conducting extension tutorials in Biology, Biochemistry, or Biomedical Sciences is beneficial. The ideal candidate will be able to ‘teach to the top’ and provide scaffolding, ensuring regular opportunities for critical thinking and employing techniques for checking understanding to tailor the learning experience.

Students

• Academically driven and motivated students.

• Students complete IGCSE exams at the end of G2 and then proceed to study 5/6 subjects at AS and 4/5 at AL (including English) or follow the AP curriculum.

• Average international exam results typically reflect grades A/A* across the school.

• The 2025 cohort received 41 Oxbridge offers, with over 90% of students applying to UK universities achieving offers from the top 10 institutions.

• US university offers include prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, and Cornell.

• Students excel across a diverse range of subjects, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Science, and Mathematics.

• Maximum class sizes are 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.

• A broad array of extracurricular activities with over 200 clubs, both staff-led and student-led.

Schedule

• Working hours: Monday – Friday 07:50 – 16:40 (with an early start at 07:30 on Mondays and an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).

• Standard contact teaching time is 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approximately 50% timetable).

• Six periods per week are allocated for personal time when the teacher is not required on campus.

• Extra-Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30).

• CPD – A wide range of professional development opportunities available, both online and in-person.

• Holidays – 1 week for October's China National Day, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, plus Chinese public holidays, and a summer break from mid-June to early August.

Pastoral

Pastoral care is central to our mission at SCIE. All classroom teachers play a vital role in supporting the holistic development of students, promoting their safety, sense of belonging, and wellbeing during their time at the college.

• Form tutor responsibilities – Most classroom teachers will have a form group of approximately 20 students, conducting regular individual mentoring meetings and form time sessions, as well as teaching a weekly PSHE lesson. As the primary point of contact for students, form tutors are responsible for fostering relationships with their tutees beyond the classroom. This role includes an additional allowance.

• Teachers without a form tutor assignment may be expected to take on other pastoral responsibilities as needed.

• Pastoral professional development – Alongside annual safeguarding training, there are additional opportunities for enhancing your practice in this area and contributing to overall school pastoral initiatives.

Benefits

• A published fixed salary scale (reviewed annually) based on teaching experience and annual progression at SCIE.

• Accommodation provided by the school (expat apartments located near the campus).

• Comprehensive international medical coverage (self + 1 dependent).

• Annual flight allowance (self + 1 dependent).

• Access to a dedicated staff gym on campus.
