Job Summary
The School Counsellor will play a crucial role in promoting the well-being of students, staff, and families within our educational community. The ideal candidate will offer culturally responsive and inclusive counselling services that address mental health, emotional, social, academic, and behavioral needs. Grounded in Indigenous values and teachings, the School Counsellor will advocate for students, build meaningful relationships, and develop strategies that support the holistic development of the school community.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Counselling and Student Support
- Conduct individual and group counselling sessions to meet the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students.
- Develop and implement intervention strategies that specifically address the challenges faced by Indigenous students and their families.
- Support students navigating transitions, grief, trauma, and other significant life events.
Cultural Integration
- Incorporate Dakelh language, Indigenous teachings, and cultural practices into counselling approaches.
- Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the wider Nak’azdli Whut’en community to weave traditional values into school-wide programs.
Education and Advocacy
- Create and facilitate workshops and educational programs for students, staff, and parents focusing on resilience, mental health awareness, and cultural identity.
- Advocate for students and families by connecting them with additional resources and support services.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Partner with teachers, administrators, and community members to develop and execute student support plans.
- Participate as a member of the school's crisis response team, providing expertise and intervention during emergencies.
- Lead initiatives that promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning atmosphere.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in line with ethical and legal standards.
- Provide regular reports and recommendations to school leadership on trends and initiatives related to student well-being.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (required).
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a school or youth counsellor, with a preference for 5 years.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and a strong understanding of their cultural contexts (highly preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of the historical, cultural, and linguistic heritage of the Nak’azdli Whut’en community.
- Proficient in trauma-informed methodologies and practices.
- Familiarity with the Dakelh language is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage sensitive and complex situations with cultural humility and professionalism.
