About This Role

Job Overview

St Julian's School is on the lookout for a dedicated and qualified individual to fill the role of Learning Support Teacher within our Secondary School. The position will be supervised by the Head of Learning Support for the entire school.

About St. Julian's School

Established in 1932, we are a prominent, inclusive British international school serving students aged 3-18, known for our academic excellence. We currently enroll just over 1,200 students from more than 60 nationalities. Our school comprises three divisions: Primary, Secondary, and Portuguese. The Primary Section includes 480 students across three classes per year. The Secondary Section accommodates 630 students in a four-form entry system. The Portuguese Section has 140 students from 1º to 9º Ano, with one class per year.

Specific Responsibilities

For a designated group of students:

Lead Provision Development


Evaluate learning support needs from the moment of referral or allocation.


Conduct assessments using standardized, diagnostic, formative, and summative methods.


Collaborate with the Head of Learning Support (HoLS) to organize the planning of learning support provisions.


Update school information systems with data relevant to assigned students.


Work alongside teachers to execute learning plans and implement differentiation strategies.


Engage in shadowing and observations as necessary and provide feedback to subject teachers.


Coordinate with HoLS to ensure appropriate access arrangements are established for assigned students.


Serve as the primary contact for inquiries regarding the learning needs of assigned students.


Advocate for the needs of students within the broader school context.

Monitor Progress


Maintain organized records of assessments in accordance with departmental guidelines.


Participate in regular evaluations of support plans to ensure they remain effective and relevant.


Document student progress clearly, following the school’s reporting procedures.


Collect and deliver feedback (e.g., round robins) at intervals agreed upon with HoLS.

Communication


Coordinate with relevant subject teachers regarding the needs and support strategies for students.


Lead progress and review meetings with parents, teachers, tutors, etc.


Inform stakeholders about the outcomes of meetings.


Attend parent evenings and other meetings as necessary.


Collaborate with and make referrals to other departments or external professionals when needed.


Maintain regular communication with HoLS and report any concerns.


Ensure all communication is documented and filed according to departmental procedures.

Responsibilities as a Learning Support Teacher in Mainstream Subject Classrooms


Act as a co-teacher to establish classroom expectations, routines, and structures.


Work with the classroom teacher to discuss the learning needs and support for students.


Co-develop lesson objectives and assist the teacher with lesson differentiation and resource creation.


Provide guidance to teachers from a learning support perspective, including assessments, methodologies, and next steps for support.


Exhibit high-quality teaching practices and model support strategies within the classroom.


Collaborate with the classroom teacher to ensure appropriate adjustments are made for students needing additional support.


Facilitate in-class access arrangements as necessary (e.g., serving as a reader or scribe).


Engage in pre-teaching or re-teaching as required.


Aid the teacher in monitoring and assessing students’ progress and achievements.


Contribute to report writing and communication with families as appropriate.

Responsibilities as a Learning Support Teacher of Intervention Lessons


Evaluate student needs through suitable assessments.


Ensure that intervention sessions align with the inclusion statement:


Clear entry and exit criteria.


Focus on fostering student independence and reintegration into mainstream lessons.


Set timelines for reviews.


Design and plan small group and individual support sessions tailored to student needs.


Establish data-informed learning objectives and communicate these with subject teachers.


Set high standards for classroom expectations, routines, and structures.


Differentiate teaching to cater to individual needs.


Analyze assessment outcomes to inform future teaching steps.


Create appropriate resources to enhance student learning.


Provide access arrangements or accommodations for exams as necessary.


Assign and grade homework and independent learning tasks when appropriate.


Monitor and evaluate student progress and achievements.


Keep all relevant parties updated on students’ targets and progress at agreed intervals, such as through review meetings, bulletins, report writing, and parent evenings.

Additional Departmental Responsibilities


Assist in the training and development of subject teachers and other staff members.


Conduct relevant assessments, including screenings, specialist assessments, and psycho-educational evaluations as needed.


Participate in departmental data analysis to identify potential needs, underperformance, and areas for development.


Support transition processes for students with learning support needs.


Assist with external documentation and reports as required.


Provide guidance to parents on how to support their children at home as appropriate.


Help with departmental administration as needed.


Engage in departmental self-reviews and evaluations.


Participate in ongoing professional development and training.


Stay informed about new initiatives and developments in learning support.

Whole School Responsibilities


Familiarize yourself with and adhere to all school policies and procedures, particularly in regards to safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality.


Provide examination invigilation and access arrangements as needed.


Cover lessons in accordance with school policy.


Perform lunch and break time duties as per school policy.


Lead or participate in assemblies and extracurricular activities that align with departmental goals.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
