Role Overview

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) – Senior School is tasked with overseeing the pastoral care, safeguarding, behaviour, and wellbeing services for students in Grades 9 to 12.

This position is pivotal in ensuring that students have a secure, structured, and supportive environment during a crucial stage of their adolescent journey. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) merges strategic leadership with a strong daily presence, aiding students as they cultivate independence, resilience, and emotional maturity while managing escalating academic expectations.

The role necessitates close collaboration with Heads of Year, tutors, teachers, the Wellbeing team, parents, and the Senior School Leadership Team to maintain a consistent and high-quality pastoral framework throughout the Senior School.

Key Purpose of the Role

● Develop and lead a cohesive pastoral strategy for the Senior School

● Ensure high standards of student behaviour, wellbeing, and safeguarding

● Support the emotional, social, and personal development of students

● Foster strong relationships with parents and families

● Promote uniform expectations, routines, and pastoral care across Grades 9–12

● Contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture that enables student success

Leadership Responsibilities

As part of the Senior School Leadership Team, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) will:

● Lead the pastoral care and wellbeing services for all Senior School students

● Design, implement, and assess the pastoral framework for the Senior School in alignment with the school's core values

● Act as a key pastoral leader and main point of contact for students, staff, and parents

● Stand in for the Head of Senior School when necessary

● Serve as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for the Senior School

● Chair pastoral meetings with Heads of Year and tutors

● Provide line management for Heads of Year (Grades 9–12)

● Promote high standards of behaviour, exemplifying professionalism, fairness, and empathy

● Ensure the consistent application of behaviour policies, rewards, and sanctions

● Assist in staff recruitment, training, and induction processes for pastoral roles

● Ensure student input is valued and effectively integrated into school life

● Regularly report to the Head of Senior School and Executive Leadership on pastoral issues

Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will:

● Oversee student wellbeing, behaviour, and discipline within the Senior School

● Lead the response to pastoral incidents and ensure appropriate follow-up actions

● Support students dealing with challenges related to:

○ emotional regulation

○ peer relationships and conflicts

○ anxiety and transitions

○ organization and independence

● Collaborate closely with the Wellbeing Team, including counselors, psychologists, and learning support staff

● Monitor students identified as being at risk and coordinate early intervention strategies

● Assist in reintegration following absences, illnesses, or pastoral incidents

● Promote a positive culture focused on wellbeing, belonging, and personal development

Safeguarding Responsibilities (Deputy DSL)

In accordance with school safeguarding policies and local legal requirements, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) will:

● Function as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead for the Senior School

● Act as a primary contact for safeguarding issues

● Ensure safeguarding concerns are documented, tracked, and escalated appropriately

● Collaborate with the Pastoral Lead for Middle School to facilitate smooth transitions for students entering the Senior School

● Engage with external agencies when necessary

● Support staff training and awareness regarding safeguarding protocols

● Foster a culture of vigilance, care, and professional accountability

Operational Responsibilities

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will:

● Oversee attendance, punctuality, and related follow-up procedures

● Analyze behaviour trends and student wellbeing data

● Ensure consistent practices among tutors and effective reporting

● Support the design and execution of the Form Time program

● Lead assemblies and pastoral sessions for Senior School students

● Aid in developing the House System and organizing regular events

● Oversee team-building trips for each cohort

● Coordinate parent information sessions and pastoral events

● Contribute to the review and development of key policies, including those related to behaviour, anti-bullying, and safeguarding

● Collaborate with Admissions on pastoral insights concerning student transitions and placements

● Work with Health & Safety teams where pastoral concerns intersect with student safety

● Assist in organizing Senior School events such as Prom and Graduation

Wider Responsibilities

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will:

● Maintain a visible presence during breaks, transitions, and other unstructured times

● Attend leadership, safeguarding, and wellbeing meetings

● Support the growth of student leadership, including student council and prefects

● Coordinate pastoral aspects of the school calendar, including:

○ parent information evenings

○ coffee mornings

○ student wellbeing initiatives

● Contribute to duty rosters and emergency procedures as needed

● Perform any other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Senior School

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

● Extensive pastoral leadership experience in a secondary or international school environment

● A robust understanding of adolescent development

● Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities

● A calm, authoritative, and relational leadership approach

● Strong knowledge and practice in safeguarding

● The capacity to balance empathy with clear expectations and boundaries

● Strong organizational and leadership capabilities

● A commitment to inclusive, student-centered education

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) reports directly to the Head of Senior School and will receive a relief of 10 hours per week to fulfill their duties.
