Summary
The Math Specialist / Instructional Coach is essential to advancing BFIS's Vision for Learning by improving the teaching and learning of mathematics across all grade levels, from Elementary to High School. This role focuses on enhancing teacher expertise, ensuring uniform instructional practices, and cultivating a profound understanding of mathematics that encourages students to learn with confidence, take initiative, and enjoy their educational journey.
As part of the Teaching and Learning Team, the Math Specialist / Instructional Coach works alongside educators, Curriculum Coordinators, and school leaders to align the mathematics curriculum—both in its development and execution—with the Common Core Mathematics Standards for Elementary and the IB MYP and DP frameworks for Secondary. This role prioritizes depth over breadth, promotes productive struggle, embraces inclusive practices, fosters creativity and innovation, and ensures coherence across various divisions within a diverse, multilingual international school environment.
The Math Instructional Coach functions within a supportive, non-evaluative atmosphere that emphasizes trust, collaboration, professional growth, and safeguarding.
Reports to: Associate Head of School
Collaborates with Curriculum Coordinators, the Teaching and Learning Team, School Leadership, Student Support Teams, and Mathematics educators as necessary.
Skills and Requirements
Essential
•
Comprehensive knowledge of mathematics pedagogy, curriculum, learning pathways, and effective instructional strategies
•
Demonstrated success in coaching and supporting adult learners
•
Experience in leveraging data and student work to inform instructional decisions
•
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•
Commitment to inclusive, concept-driven, and student-focused mathematics instruction
Desirable
•
Experience in an international or multilingual educational context
•
Familiarity with inquiry-based, transdisciplinary, and interdisciplinary teaching approaches
•
Experience in supporting educators across different grade levels or divisions
•
Fluency in Spanish or additional languages
Qualifications
•
Bachelor’s degree with appropriate teaching certification and a Master’s Degree in a relevant field
•
Minimum of five years of experience teaching mathematics in a classroom setting
•
Training or certification in instructional coaching, curriculum and instruction, or related areas
•
Understanding of Common Core Mathematics Standards
•
Experience with one or more IB programs (MYP and/or DP is highly preferred)
•
Experience coaching educators individually, in teams, and within whole-school contexts
•
Desirable: Background in Adaptive Schools, Cognitive Coaching, or other collaborative frameworks
