The Assistant Head of Secondary plays a vital role within the Secondary Senior Leadership Team, aiding in the strategic, academic, and operational leadership of the phase. This position supports the Head of Secondary in advancing school improvement objectives, upholding high expectations, and ensuring a consistent and positive experience for all students.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Assist the Head of Secondary in realizing the school’s vision, values, and strategic improvement goals.
Participate in self-evaluation, improvement planning, and preparation for inspections.
Exemplify high professional standards and foster a culture of aspiration, inclusion, accountability, and ongoing improvement.
Teaching, Learning, and Standards
Evaluate the quality of teaching and learning through lesson observations, learning walks, work scrutiny, and student feedback.
Collaborate closely with Heads of Department, Heads of Year, and curriculum leaders to enhance attainment and accelerate progress.
Encourage uniformity in curriculum planning, assessment, feedback, and classroom practices across the Secondary phase.
Lead or assist with school-wide or phase-specific teaching and learning initiatives.
Data, Assessment, and Reporting
Utilize assessment data to pinpoint trends, strengths, and areas needing development, aiding targeted intervention strategies.
Contribute to the establishment and enhancement of effective tracking, monitoring, and reporting systems.
Assist in the analysis and presentation of student performance data to senior leaders, governors, and external stakeholders.
A strong background or interest in data leadership and performance reporting would be beneficial.
Pastoral Care, Behaviour, and Safeguarding
Promote high standards of behaviour, attendance, and student conduct throughout the Secondary school.
Collaborate with pastoral and inclusion teams to prioritize student wellbeing, safeguarding, and a sense of belonging.
Engage professionally with parents to address concerns and foster constructive partnerships.
Maintain and promote a robust safeguarding culture in accordance with school policies and statutory requirements.
Operational Leadership
Support the smooth day-to-day operations of the Secondary school.
Assist with timetabling, events, examinations, enrichment programmes, and school routines.
Ensure that policies and procedures are applied consistently and effectively.
Staff Development and Performance
Line manage designated middle leaders or teaching staff as necessary.
Contribute to appraisal, performance management, and professional development processes.
Offer coaching, mentoring, and leadership support to enhance team capacity.
Encourage collaboration, professional dialogue, and opportunities for leadership development.
Parental and Community Engagement
Foster strong communication with parents to support student progress and wellbeing.
Represent the school at meetings, events, and community initiatives.
Support programmes that promote student leadership, enrichment, and broader participation.
Professional Expectations

Stay informed about current educational research, curriculum advancements, and inspection frameworks.
