About the Academic English Pathway

The Academic English Pathway (AEP) is an immersive, year-long program designed for non-native English speakers entering Years 5–8 (Ages 10–14).

This initiative equips students with the essential English language skills, academic competencies, and subject knowledge necessary for a smooth transition into mainstream classes. The curriculum, developed by the AEP Curriculum Committee, aligns with AISM’s educational standards.

Who Are We Looking For

We are in search of a passionate, student-centered educator who is eager to teach Mathematics and Science to English language learners. You will deliver curriculum content through a content-based language instruction approach, enhancing students’ proficiency in academic English within these subjects. Additionally, you will provide instruction in specific English acquisition skills, including Grammar, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, as part of the AEP team.

You will be collaborative, adaptable, and committed to the program's rigorous nature. Acknowledging that language acquisition is a collective endeavor, you will utilize innovative, inquiry-based methods to make content accessible to learners at varying proficiency levels. Your role will grant you significant ownership and empowerment.

Job Description

The Mathematics and Science Instructor is a reflective educator who employs content-based language instruction strategies to create positive learning environments that engage and challenge all students, aiding them in enhancing their academic English and subject knowledge. The instructor will be responsible for teaching Mathematics and Science, co-teaching core English skills within the AEP, and serving as a Staff Mentor to a designated group of students.

Role & Responsibilities

The Mathematics and Science Instructor will:

• Deliver engaging and well-structured Mathematics and Science lessons that promote English language development

• Implement the AEP content-based language instruction method, catering to diverse English proficiency levels and learning needs

• Ensure thorough understanding and application of the approved AEP curriculum within the teaching areas

• Prepare, assess, grade, return, and organize assessment tasks, tests, and examinations to a high standard

• Collaborate with designated students to monitor and support their progress according to individual learning objectives

• Timely prepare high-quality student reports and progress updates

• Stay current on curriculum developments and pertinent issues in Mathematics, Science, and EAL pedagogy

• Work closely with the AEP Program Leader to ensure curricula and programs meet high standards and are appropriate for their purpose

• Assist in the ongoing assessment, monitoring, and enhancement of programs to uphold quality

• Maintain accurate records, registers, mark books, and database entries in a timely manner

• Respond promptly to parent communications and student inquiries within expected time frames

• Utilize a variety of teaching strategies, including innovative applications of Information Technology

• Maintain appropriate classroom management and behavior standards in accordance with School policy

• Foster a caring and supportive classroom environment for all students

• Act as a Staff Mentor for a designated group of students, supporting their well-being, adaptation, and academic progress

• Provide detailed weekly progress reports to the families of designated student mentees

• Actively participate in the co-curricular life of the School and encourage student involvement in activities that promote language learning and socialization

• Support AEP online and blended learning initiatives through content creation, teaching responsibilities, and curriculum development

• Attend morning briefings, staff meetings, and professional development sessions as needed

• Build effective working relationships with colleagues and parents

• Engage in all aspects of school life and support holistic education

• Perform any additional duties assigned by the AEP Program Leader or Head of School

Qualifications & Skills

• A relevant degree in Mathematics, Science, or Education, along with a teaching qualification (or equivalent)

• TESOL qualifications or an equivalent certification

• A minimum of three years of experience teaching EAL/ESL students

• Proven experience as a class teacher at upper primary or secondary school levels

• Familiarity with content-based language instruction or sheltered instruction methodologies, such as SIOP (preferred)

• Experience with differentiated instruction and personalized learning

• Background in student mentoring and pastoral care

• Experience in an international school setting (preferred)

• Higher degree or recognized professional qualification (preferred)

• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

• Proficient with school systems, databases, communication platforms, and educational technology

• Fluent in English and has personal experience studying another language; proficiency in Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese is preferred
