About This Role

John Paul II High School (JPII) is seeking an experienced and passionate Learning Area Leader for English and Languages to lead this vital learning area into an exciting new phase of growth. With responsibility for the English programme, and supporting the teachers of Te Reo Māori, Japanese and Mandarin, you will provide leadership and direction within the school.


Welcoming our largest student cohort ever in 2026, JPII is the school of choice on the West Coast. This role is ideal for an experienced or aspiring leader with the drive and enthusiasm to ensure English and Languages thrive, inspiring both students and colleagues.


Key Responsibilities



  • Have proven experience teaching NCEA Level 3 and Scholarship

  • Lead and manage curriculum review and change, including innovative texts, pedagogical approaches, and assessment

  • Demonstrate strong expertise in literacy across the curriculum

  • Be highly student-centred, collegial, and committed to collaborative leadership

  • Contribute positively to the extra-curricular life and culture of the school

  • Have experience with PB4L and restorative practices (an advantage)
