The primary responsibility of the Head of Subject is to provide robust academic leadership. This role requires leading, managing, and developing the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its endeavors. Heads of Subject must demonstrate leadership, vision, and empower others to carry out the agreed departmental strategy within the school.

Academic Leadership

• Develop, implement, and oversee the Subject Curriculum and Schemes of Work across the Secondary school in alignment with the English National Curriculum.

• Create, gather, and analyze appropriate assessments across all Year groups, utilizing this data to enhance teaching, learning, and student achievement.

• Ensure high-quality reports are delivered to parents in accordance with whole school expectations.

• Select suitable external examination courses.

• Manage the performance of all departmental staff and report to the Head of Secondary regarding training needs, instances of excellence, and areas of concern.

• Foster a culture of excellence, cooperation, and respect both within the department and beyond.

• Coordinate staff timetables with Senior Staff to optimize staffing resources and explore opportunities for collaboration with others outside the department.

• Propose appropriate plans, suggestions, and recommendations to the Head of Secondary for departmental improvement; refresh and develop new programs to attract new students and promote the department.

• Provide training for teachers and availability for pastoral care.

• Ensure a safe and healthy environment for both staff and students, fully adhering to health and safety regulations.

• Conduct lesson observations within the department, provide coaching and mentoring for staff, and give feedback on observations; comply with both internal and external quality assurance and risk management procedures.

Resource Management

• Ensure the department operates within its allocated budget.

• Be responsible for departmental stock, its effective use, and maintenance.

General

• Teach a schedule appropriate to the school curriculum's needs.

• Offer a suitable extracurricular program through the department.

• Ensure the health and safety of all staff and students during department lessons.

• Undertake additional tasks and duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Secondary or the Principal.

Health and Safety

• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to safeguard students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

• Assist in enforcing all policies and regulations governing student life and conduct.

• Ensure that all health and safety rules and procedures are adhered to.

• Maintain awareness of all health and safety measures necessary while at school.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
