Why Vietnam Is South East Asia's Rising Star

Vietnam has emerged as one of the most exciting destinations in the international teaching circuit. The country's booming economy, young population, and rapidly expanding middle class have fuelled explosive growth in private and international education. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi now host over 80 international schools between them, with new campuses opening annually.

The combination of low cost of living, vibrant street culture, exceptional food, and a warm, welcoming population makes Vietnam irresistible for adventurous educators. While salaries are lower than the Middle East, your purchasing power is extraordinary — and the lifestyle is unmatched.

Key Insight: Vietnam is where your teaching salary buys you a genuinely luxurious lifestyle. Rooftop apartments, daily restaurant meals, weekend beach trips, and a live-in housekeeper — all on a teacher's pay.

Work Permit & Visa

  1. Business Visa: School arranges initial entry (DN visa)
  2. Work Permit: Applied for after arrival. Requires degree, teaching qualification, police check (all apostilled), and a health check in Vietnam.
  3. Temporary Residence Card: 1-2 year visa, tied to your work permit.

Processing takes 4-8 weeks after arrival. Your school handles everything.

Important: Vietnam requires 2+ years of post-qualification experience for work permit eligibility. This is strictly enforced.

Life in Vietnam

Climate

  • HCMC (South): Tropical. 25-35°C year-round. Wet season (May-Nov) brings dramatic afternoon downpours.
  • Hanoi (North): Four seasons. Hot, humid summers (35°C+). Cool, drizzly winters (10-18°C).

Why Teachers Love Vietnam

  • Food: Pho, banh mi, bun cha, com tam — Vietnamese cuisine is one of the world's greatest. A street meal costs VND 30,000-50,000 (£0.95-£1.60).
  • Coffee culture: Vietnamese coffee (ca phe sua da) is legendary. Cafés are everywhere.
  • Motorbike life: Chaotic, exhilarating, and eventually second nature. Many teachers buy a motorbike (VND 10-30 million / £300-£950).
  • Travel: Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Hoi An, Phu Quoc, Da Nang — all accessible on weekends.
  • Community: Tight-knit expat teacher community with active social events.
