Why Singapore Attracts the World's Best Educators

Singapore's education system is consistently ranked among the best in the world by PISA, and its international school sector reflects that obsession with excellence. The city-state hosts approximately 70 international schools educating over 50,000 students, and competition for places at top-tier institutions is fierce — meaning schools invest heavily in recruiting and retaining outstanding teachers.

Unlike the Middle East, Singapore does levy income tax — but rates are remarkably low (0-22% progressive, with most teachers falling in the 7-15% bracket). What Singapore lacks in tax-free status, it compensates with unparalleled quality of life, world-class infrastructure, exceptional safety, and a strategic location for exploring the whole of South East Asia.

Key Insight: Singapore is the destination for teachers who want career prestige. Having a top Singapore international school on your CV (like UWC, Tanglin Trust, or SAS) carries enormous weight in the global recruitment market.

Package Components

Singapore packages are typically less comprehensive than the Middle East but the overall value proposition is strong:

  • Housing: Varies enormously. Some top schools provide housing or a housing allowance (SGD 3,000–6,000/month). Others include it in a higher base salary. Always clarify.
  • Flights: Annual return flights for you and dependants (some schools only cover the teacher).
  • Medical Insurance: Comprehensive private coverage is standard. Singapore's public healthcare (polyclinics) is also excellent and affordable.
  • Tuition Fee Remission: 50-100% at top-tier schools — critical given fees of SGD 30,000-50,000/year.
  • CPF Contributions: As a non-resident (first 2 years), you won't contribute to CPF. After that, employer contributions apply — effectively increasing your total compensation.
  • Relocation: SGD 3,000-8,000 toward shipping and settling-in costs.

Top International Schools

Singapore's international school landscape is dominated by a small number of exceptional institutions:

  • United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) — Two campuses, IB curriculum, arguably Asia's most prestigious international school.
  • Tanglin Trust School — The grande dame. British curriculum, established 1925. Outstanding reputation.
  • Singapore American School (SAS) — One of the largest American-curriculum schools in the world. Premium campus.
  • Stamford American International School (SAIS) — Cognita group, dual American-IB track.
  • Australian International School (AIS) — Strong NSW curriculum offerings.
  • Dulwich College Singapore — British independent school tradition.
  • Overseas Family School (OFS) — Excellent IB school with strong arts programme.
  • Canadian International School (CIS) — IB World School with a distinctive Canadian ethos.

Cost of Living

Singapore is expensive — there's no way around it. Rent is the primary cost driver. However, food, transport, and daily essentials are remarkably affordable if you eat local.

Monthly Budget (Couple + 2 Children, Housing Provided)

CategoryMonthly (SGD)Monthly (GBP)

Family reality: Singapore is where tuition remission makes or breaks the financial case. A dual-income couple with full fee remission at a top school saves the family SGD 60,000-100,000/year (£34,000-£57,000) in fees alone.

What's Cheap

  • Hawker food: A meal costs SGD 3-6 (£1.70-£3.40). Michelin-starred hawker stalls exist.
  • Public transport: MRT is clean, fast, air-conditioned, and costs SGD 1-2 per journey.
  • Domestic travel: The entire island is 50km across — there's no commute problem.

What's Expensive

  • Rent: The single biggest cost. Expect SGD 2,500+ for a modest 1-bed.
  • Cars: Singapore's COE system makes car ownership prohibitively expensive (SGD 100,000+ just for the certificate).
  • Alcohol: A pint in a bar costs SGD 12-18 (£7-10). Wine from a supermarket: SGD 15-30.

Visa & Work Pass

International teachers require an Employment Pass (EP), sponsored by your school.

Requirements

  • Minimum salary: SGD 5,000/month (MOM requirement for EP)
  • Recognised degree from an accredited university
  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, B.Ed, or equivalent)
  • Police clearance from your home country

Timeline

  • EP processing: 1-3 weeks (usually very fast)
  • Dependant Passes for spouse/children: applied simultaneously
  • No exit permit required — you can leave and re-enter freely

Singapore's immigration system is efficient and predictable. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) runs a transparent points-based system.

Life as a Teacher in Singapore

The Academic Year

Most international schools follow a Northern Hemisphere calendar (August – June), though some Australian-curriculum schools follow January – December.

Climate

Singapore sits 1° north of the equator. The climate is constant year-round:

  • Temperature: 25-33°C, every single day
  • Humidity: High (80%+)
  • Rain: Frequent tropical downpours, usually brief. Carry an umbrella.

There are no seasons. If you crave seasonal change, this will take adjustment — but the consistency means you never need to plan around weather.

Why Teachers Love Singapore

  • Safety: Consistently ranked the world's safest city. Walking alone at 3am is completely normal.
  • Food: Arguably Asia's greatest food city. Chinese, Malay, Indian, Japanese, Korean — all at hawker-stall prices.
  • Travel hub: Weekend flights to Bali, Bangkok, KL, Vietnam, and the Philippines for SGD 50-200 return.
  • Efficiency: Everything works. Bureaucracy is minimal. Public services are excellent.
  • Green spaces: Despite being a city-state, Singapore has incredible parks — Botanic Gardens (UNESCO), MacRitchie Reservoir, East Coast Park.

Is Singapore Right For You?

Choose Singapore if you want:

  • Career-defining credentials on your CV
  • The world's best quality of life in a tropical, ultra-safe city
  • Access to Asia's most exciting travel destinations
  • An intellectually stimulating, high-expectation teaching environment

Consider alternatives if:

  • You want to maximise raw savings (Middle East packages are more aggressive)
  • You prefer space and nature (Singapore is dense and urban)
  • You dislike heat and humidity year-round
