Why Hong Kong Remains a Global Education Powerhouse

Hong Kong maintains one of the world's most established international school sectors, with approximately 80 international schools serving a highly multicultural student population. The territory's unique "One Country, Two Systems" framework means English remains widely used in business and education, and the legal/financial infrastructure is distinctly Western.

Hong Kong's tax system is exceptionally favourable — a flat salaries tax of 15% (or progressive rates up to 17%, whichever is lower), with no GST/VAT, no capital gains tax, and no tax on overseas income. Combined with world-class schools and an unbeatable geographic position, Hong Kong remains a top-tier destination.

Key Statistic: Hong Kong's ESF (English Schools Foundation) is the largest English-medium international school organisation in Asia, operating 22 schools and kindergartens.

  • Flights: Annual return flights for teacher and dependants.
  • Medical Insurance: Comprehensive private coverage. Hong Kong's public system is also excellent.
  • Tuition Fee Remission: Typically 50-100% for up to 2 children at your employing school.
  • Gratuity: 10-15% of base salary, paid as a lump sum on contract completion.
  • MPF: Mandatory Provident Fund (pension equivalent), 5% employer contribution.

Top Schools

  • ESF Schools — 22 institutions across the territory. Government-subsidised, well-resourced.
  • Chinese International School (CIS) — Bilingual Mandarin-English, highly selective.
  • German Swiss International School (GSIS) — Dual-stream, exceptional reputation.
  • Victoria Shanghai Academy (VSA) — IB school with strong bilingual focus.
  • Harrow International School Hong Kong — British boarding school tradition.
  • Kellett School — British curriculum, Kowloon Bay and Pok Fu Lam campuses.

Family reality: Hong Kong's live-in domestic helper system (HKD 4,870/month minimum wage) is a game-changer for teaching families. Many expat families with two working parents rely on helpers for childcare, cooking, and household management — at a fraction of UK childcare costs.

What's Cheap

  • Local food: Dim sum breakfast for HKD 30-50 (£2.90-£4.85). Cha chaan teng set meal for HKD 45-65.
  • Transport: MTR is one of the world's best metro systems. Octopus card covers everything.
  • Domestic helpers: Live-in domestic helper for HKD 4,870/month (government minimum wage).

What's Expensive

  • Rent: A small 1-bed flat on Hong Kong Island starts at HKD 15,000-25,000/month.
  • Alcohol in bars: HKD 70-100+ per drink in Lan Kwai Fong.
  • International groceries: Imported Western goods are premium-priced.

Visa & Immigration

Teachers require an Employment Visa, sponsored by your school:

  1. School submits application to Immigration Department
  2. Processing: 4-6 weeks (usually smooth)
  3. Dependant visas for spouse/children processed simultaneously
  4. Visa allows unlimited entry/exit

Hong Kong's immigration system is efficient and transparent. No attestation of documents required (unlike the Middle East).

Life in Hong Kong
