About the Academic English Pathway

The Academic English Pathway (AEP) is an intensive, immersive program tailored for non-native English speakers entering Years 5–8 (Ages 10–14).

This comprehensive year-long program equips students with the necessary English language skills, academic abilities, and subject knowledge to successfully transition into mainstream classes. The curriculum is crafted by the AEP Curriculum Committee and aligns with AISM’s educational frameworks.

Who Are We Looking For

We seek a passionate, student-focused educator who is enthusiastic about teaching Language and Literature and Humanities to English language learners. You will implement curriculum content through a content-based language instruction approach, enhancing students’ academic English proficiency alongside these subjects. Additionally, you will teach essential English acquisition skills (Grammar, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) as part of the broader AEP team.

You are a collaborative and adaptable educator who is committed to the program's intensive nature. Recognizing that language acquisition is a shared responsibility among all teachers, you employ creative, inquiry-based methods to make content accessible to learners at diverse proficiency levels. You will have significant ownership and empowerment within your role.

Job Description

The Language and Literature / Humanities Instructor is a reflective practitioner who leverages content-based language instruction strategies to cultivate engaging learning environments that motivate and challenge every learner, enhancing both their academic English skills and subject knowledge. The instructor will teach Language and Literature and Humanities, co-facilitate core English skills across the AEP, and serve as a Staff Mentor for a designated group of students.

Role and Responsibilities

The Language and Literature / Humanities Instructor will:

• Conduct engaging and well-structured lessons in Language and Literature and Humanities that incorporate English language development throughout.

• Utilize the AEP content-based language instruction model, differentiating for various English proficiency levels and learning requirements.

• Foster students’ reading comprehension, analytical writing, literary response, and critical thinking abilities using age-appropriate texts and materials.

• Teach Humanities subjects (e.g., History, Geography, Social Studies) employing scaffolded, language-rich instructional strategies that enhance both content understanding and academic English.

• Ensure thorough comprehension and execution of the approved AEP curriculum within their teaching areas.

• Create, collect, evaluate, return, and file assessments, tests, and examinations to a high standard of quality.

• Collaborate with designated students to track and support progress according to their individual learning objectives.

• Ensure that student reports and progress updates are completed on time and to a high standard.

• Stay informed about curriculum developments and issues relevant to Language and Literature, Humanities, and EAL pedagogy.

• Work closely with the AEP Program Leader to guarantee high standards in curricula and programs.

• Assist in the continuous assessment, monitoring, and improvement of programs to maintain excellence.

• Keep accurate records, registers, mark-books, and database entries promptly and meticulously.

• Ensure efficient communication with parents and address student inquiries within expected timeframes.

• Employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including innovative uses of Information Technologies.

• Maintain appropriate classroom management and behavior standards in accordance with school policy.

• Create a caring and nurturing classroom atmosphere for all students.

• Serve as a Staff Mentor for a designated group of students, supporting their well-being, adjustment, and academic progress.

• Provide detailed weekly progress reports to the families of designated student mentees.

• Actively engage in the co-curricular activities of the School and promote student involvement in initiatives that enhance language learning and socialization.

• Support AEP online and blended learning initiatives, including content development, teaching responsibilities, and curriculum design.

• Attend morning briefings, staff meetings, and required professional development sessions.

• Establish effective collaborative relationships with colleagues and parents.

• Participate in all aspects of school life to support holistic education.

• Carry out any other responsibilities assigned by the AEP Program Leader or Head of School.

Qualifications and Skills

• A relevant degree in English, Literature, Humanities, Social Sciences, or Education, alongside a teaching qualification (or equivalent).

• TESOL qualifications or equivalent credentials.

• A minimum of three years’ experience teaching EAL/ESL students.

• Proven experience as a class teacher at the upper primary or secondary school level.

• Familiarity with content-based language instruction or sheltered instruction approaches, such as SIOP (preferred).

• Experience in differentiated instruction and personalized learning.

• Background in student mentoring and pastoral care.

• Experience within an international school environment (preferred).

• Higher degree or recognized professional qualification (preferred).

• Evidence of continuous relevant professional development.

• Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

• Proficient in utilizing school systems, databases, communication platforms, and educational technology.

• Fluent in English with personal experience studying another language; proficiency in Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese is preferred.
