About the Academic English Pathway (AEP)

The Academic English Pathway (AEP) is a comprehensive, immersive academic English program tailored for non-native English speakers entering Years 5–8 (Ages 10–14).

This year-long initiative provides students with the necessary English language proficiency, academic skills, and subject knowledge to transition successfully into mainstream classes. The curriculum is crafted by the AEP Curriculum Committee and aligns with AISM’s educational frameworks.

Who Are We Looking For

We seek a dedicated and enthusiastic EAL / Language Acquisition specialist who flourishes in an intensive, immersive English language learning environment.

As the lead teacher for focused English language acquisition skills—Grammar, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—you will work closely with colleagues in various subject areas to integrate language development throughout the AEP curriculum. You are collaborative, flexible, and dedicated to the program's intensive demands. You bring significant expertise in second language acquisition theory and practice, employing innovative, evidence-based techniques to enhance English proficiency for learners from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. In this role, you will experience a high degree of ownership and empowerment.

Job Description

The EAL / Language Acquisition Teacher is a reflective practitioner who employs research-backed language teaching strategies to foster positive learning environments that inspire and challenge all learners to enhance their English language proficiency across all four domains (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

The teacher will conduct specialized EAL lessons, assist content-area colleagues with language-focused co-teaching and co-planning, and take on the role of Staff Mentor for a designated group of students.

Role & Responsibilities

The EAL / Language Acquisition Teacher will:


Deliver engaging, well-structured EAL lessons that systematically enhance students’ English language proficiency in grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking.


Develop and execute targeted language instruction that accelerates students’ academic English growth and readies them for mainstream classroom standards.


Collaborate with content-area teachers (Mathematics, Science, Language and Literature, Humanities) to co-plan and co-teach, ensuring language acquisition is integrated across all subjects.


Assess, monitor, and track students’ English language proficiency using appropriate EAL assessment tools and frameworks.


Implement the AEP content-based language instruction approach, differentiating for varying English proficiency levels and learning needs.


Ensure comprehensive understanding and application of the approved AEP curriculum within their teaching areas.


Prepare, evaluate, return, and maintain assessment tasks, tests, and examinations to a high standard.


Work with designated students to develop and track progress in alignment with their individual learning objectives.


Conduct student reports and progress updates at scheduled times and to a high quality.


Stay informed on curriculum knowledge and issues relevant to EAL pedagogy, second language acquisition research, and best practices.


Collaborate with the AEP Program Leader to ensure curricula and programs meet high standards and are fit for purpose.


Assist in the ongoing evaluation, monitoring, and enhancement of programs to ensure quality.


Contribute to the creation and organization of EAL resources, scope and sequences, and assessment materials for the AEP.


Maintain accurate records, registers, mark-books, and database entries diligently and timely.


Ensure effective communication with parents and address student inquiries promptly.


Employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including the innovative use of Information Technologies.


Uphold appropriate classroom management standards and behavioral expectations in accordance with school policy.


Create a nurturing and supportive classroom atmosphere for all students.


Serve as Staff Mentor for a designated group of students, assisting their well-being, adjustment, and academic advancement.


Provide detailed weekly progress reports to designated student mentees’ families.


Actively engage in the co-curricular life of the school and encourage student participation in activities that promote language learning and socialization.


Support AEP online and blended learning initiatives, including content creation, teaching responsibilities, and curriculum development.


Attend morning briefings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities as necessary.


Build effective working relationships with colleagues and parents.


Participate in all dimensions of school life and promote holistic education.


Perform any additional duties assigned by the AEP Program Leader or Head of School.

Qualifications & Skills

• A relevant degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English Language, Education, or a related field, along with a teaching qualification (or equivalent).

• TESOL, CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent EAL/ESL qualification.

• Minimum of three years’ experience teaching EAL/ESL students in a school environment.

• Proven expertise in second language acquisition theory and practices.

• Successful experience as a class teacher at the upper primary or secondary school level.

• Familiarity with EAL assessment frameworks and proficiency benchmarks (e.g., WIDA, SLATE, Cambridge English).

• Experience with content-based language instruction or sheltered instruction methods, e.g., SIOP (preferred).

• Experience with differentiated instruction and personalized learning.

• Background in student mentoring and pastoral care.

• Experience in an international school setting (preferred).

• Higher degree or recognized professional qualification (preferred).

• Evidence of ongoing relevant professional development.

• Highly developed interpersonal and teamwork skills.

• Strong verbal and written communication abilities in English.

• Proficient in using school systems, databases, communication platforms, and educational technology.

• Fluent in English and has personal experience learning another language; proficiency in Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese is preferred.
