Position / Job Specification: EAL Specialist

Key Responsibilities:

The EAL Specialist will report directly to the Head of Curriculum: Language Development and is expected to maintain a full teaching schedule. Our team of EAL specialists is highly motivated, experienced, and adaptable, possessing a strong understanding of the National Curriculum for England and actively contributing to its implementation. These specialists are integral to the advancement and promotion of EAL strategies for all students. This collaboration occurs through close partnerships with mainstream teachers during both the planning and execution phases, as well as through leading professional development sessions for staff. English language acquisition is a fundamental aspect of our school's mission, and we hold high expectations for our students. Establishing a robust foundation in primary education and further enhancing our students' English proficiency as they progress through school is essential to achieving these goals. EAL Specialists at Shrewsbury will be exemplary educators who comprehend the intricacies of second language acquisition and how to effectively facilitate it in this particular environment.

Professional Expectations:

The ideal candidate:

● Will possess a relevant qualification (minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent, along with an entry-level TESOL certification) and have experience, ideally in an international school context;

● Will have current knowledge of significant issues in Second Language Teacher Education;

● Will be knowledgeable about or have experience teaching EAL within mainstream curricula;

● Will have experience working with English Language Learners or a strong interest in expanding their expertise in EAL teaching and learning methodologies;

● Will be driven, enthusiastic, creative, and innovative;

● Will demonstrate excellent interpersonal abilities;

● Will be aware of and sensitive to the nuances of working in a multicultural environment;

● Will be a dedicated educator capable of inspiring students;

● Will possess a working understanding of the National Curriculum for England and aspire to achieve high standards;

● Will have skills in assessment for learning;

● Will adopt a flexible approach to working within the school's curriculum and structures;

● Will recognize the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering student potential;

● Will maintain a positive attitude towards professional growth;

● Will adhere to all school policies diligently;
