Position Profile

• Preference will be given to applicants with UK teaching experience.

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching AL/IGCSE/AP in the relevant subject is required.

• Ability to teach high-achieving students is essential.

• A degree in the appropriate field of expertise is necessary.

• A teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) is required.

Specific Responsibilities of the Teaching Position

• Create and deliver lessons in line with the Scheme of Work, incorporating a variety of learning activities.

• Design and execute assessments that align with departmental requirements, ensuring timely generation of reports that meet established standards.

• Consistently assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and implement suitable assessments to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues to cultivate a supportive and cooperative environment, sharing best practices and resources.

• Opportunities exist for teaching AP Chemistry.

• Potential to instruct in RPQ (Research Projects) & GNT (Gifted and Talented).

Brief Description of SCIE

We are a UK curriculum high school (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE) primarily serving Chinese students preparing for overseas higher education.

Since 2025, we have also introduced an AP stream, creating opportunities for educators interested in teaching AP subjects.

Our mission is to provide students with a rigorous international education that fosters outstanding academic achievement, social responsibility, creativity, independence, and enthusiasm, ensuring they are well-prepared for future opportunities.

• Selective admissions – English and Mathematics tests are administered.

• Language of instruction & communication – AS/AL English, predominantly with students at a first language level, most studying AS/AL English language or literature in A1/A2.

• Over 1800 students, focused exclusively on high school – UK Key Stages 4 & 5.

• Accreditation – Fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) & WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the US), with regional memberships in FOBISIA & EARCOS.

• Examinations – AS/AL, IGCSE (Cambridge International and AQA), and AP (College Board).

• Day & boarding school – Teachers are not required to take on boarding responsibilities or evening duties.

• Established in 2003.

Subject Department Introduction:

The Chemistry department consists of 20 full-time teachers and 6 technicians, operating across 11 specially designed laboratories. Instructors will teach a variety of classes ranging from IGCSE Chemistry in UK Years 10 and 11 to AS/AL Chemistry in UK Years 12 and 13, with AP Chemistry available for KS5 students whose academic paths align with it. The subject is highly sought after, with about two-thirds of students taking it at AS level and half at A Level. The department boasts impressive outcomes, with over 86% of students achieving A/A* at IGCSE and nearly 74% at A Level Chemistry in the latest CAIE examinations. Each year, numerous students pursue Chemistry-related courses at prestigious universities in the UK and US, many gaining placements in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Materials Sciences programs at Oxbridge.

The ideal candidate will be adaptable to the existing team dynamics, proactive, and excited about integrating practical work into their teaching. Experience in teaching Chemistry at advanced levels is expected, and the ability to facilitate extension classes in Chemistry or Biochemistry is an advantage. A commitment to high teaching standards and the ability to support student learning are crucial; the successful candidate will be skilled at creating opportunities for complex thinking and will regularly check for understanding to ensure responsive learning.

• Maximum class size is 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.

• Extensive extracurricular activities, with over 200 clubs led by both staff and students.

Schedule

• Working week: Monday – Friday 07:50 – 16:40 (07:30 start on Mondays and an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).

• Standard teaching time – 24 x 40-minute periods weekly (approximately 50% of the timetable).

• Personal time – 6 periods each week allocated in the timetable when attendance at work is not required.

• Extra-Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week for ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30).

• CPD – A wide variety of professional development opportunities are available, both online and in-person.

• Holidays – 1 week for the October China National Day holiday, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, public holidays in China, and a summer break from mid-June to early August.

Pastoral

Pastoral care is integral to the ethos at SCIE. All classroom teachers contribute to supporting students, enhancing their safety, sense of belonging, and overall wellbeing during their time at the college.

• Form tutor role – Most classroom teachers will be expected to lead a form group of approximately 20 students. This role includes regular individual mentoring sessions, conducting form time with the group, and teaching a weekly PSHE lesson. As the primary contact for students, form tutors are responsible for fostering relationships with their tutees beyond academics. This position comes with an additional allowance.

• Teachers not assigned a form tutor role may be given additional pastoral responsibilities as required.

• Pastoral professional development – In addition to annual safeguarding training, further opportunities are available to enhance practice in this area and contribute to the overall pastoral development of the school.
