Subject Department Introduction:

The Biology department comprises 14 dedicated and knowledgeable teachers alongside 4 committed technicians. We have 9 specialized Biology laboratories, including a state-of-the-art genetic engineering lab (this year, SCIE students achieved the Grand Prize at the iGEM competition).

Teachers cater to various year groups, from IGCSE (UK years 10 and 11) to Cambridge AS and A Levels (UK years 12 and 13), as well as AP Biology. Biology is a favored subject, with approximately one-third of students selecting it at the AS level. Many students pursue Biology-related disciplines at prestigious universities globally, gaining admission to programs in Biology, Biochemistry, or Natural Sciences at institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, and Ivy League universities. For the 2024-25 academic year, around 35 A2 Biology students applied for Oxbridge courses, receiving extensive expert support from our teachers throughout the application process.

We are looking for a passionate Biology teacher with significant experience across all year groups, who brings enthusiasm, adaptability, and a commitment to hands-on practical work. Experience in preparing students for pre-university levels and conducting extension tutorials in Biology, Biochemistry, or Biomedical Sciences is advantageous. The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching advanced content while providing scaffolding, ensuring frequent opportunities for critical thinking and utilizing techniques to assess understanding to customize the learning experience.

Students

• Academically ambitious and driven students.

• Students complete IGCSE examinations by the end of G2 and subsequently study 5/6 subjects at AS and 4/5 at AL (including English) or pursue the AP curriculum.

• Average international examination results typically reflect grades A/A* across the school.

• The 2025 cohort received 41 Oxbridge offers, with over 90% of students applying to UK universities securing offers from the top 10 institutions.

• US university offers include prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, and Cornell.

• Students excel across a wide variety of subjects, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Science, and Mathematics.

• Maximum class sizes are 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.

• A diverse range of extracurricular activities is available, featuring over 200 clubs, both staff-led and student-led.

Schedule

• Working hours: Monday – Friday 07:50 – 16:40 (with an early start at 07:30 on Mondays and an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).

• Standard contact teaching time is 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approximately 50% of the timetable).

• Six periods per week are designated for personal time when the teacher is not required on campus.

• Extra-Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30).

• CPD – A broad range of professional development opportunities available, both online and in-person.

• Holidays – 1 week for October's China National Day, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, in addition to Chinese public holidays, and a summer break from mid-June to early August.

Pastoral

Pastoral care is integral to our mission at SCIE. All classroom teachers play a crucial role in supporting the holistic development of students, fostering their safety, sense of belonging, and wellbeing during their time at the college.

• Form tutor responsibilities – Most classroom teachers will have a form group of approximately 20 students, conducting regular individual mentoring meetings and form time sessions, along with delivering a weekly PSHE lesson. As the primary contact for students, form tutors are responsible for cultivating relationships with their tutees beyond the classroom. This role includes an additional allowance.

• Teachers not assigned to a form tutor role may be expected to take on other pastoral duties as needed.

• Pastoral professional development – Alongside annual safeguarding training, there are additional opportunities for enhancing your practice in this area and contributing to overall school pastoral initiatives.
