Reporting to: Chief Administrative Officer

Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa is on the lookout for a dedicated full-time permanent School Principal. The successful applicant will play a crucial role in providing administrative and leadership oversight for K-12 Education, which includes the formulation, updating, planning, and delivery of educational programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate a strong sense of community within the school, engaging students, staff, parents, community members, the Mayor and Council, and outside organizations in the school's initiatives.
  • Conduct yearly evaluations of the Strategic Plan for Education and implement necessary adjustments.
  • Develop and execute annual work plans along with corresponding budgets for the school and its various projects.
  • Organize and facilitate educational meetings with various stakeholders, including the community, staff, First Nations Schools Association, First Nation Education Steering Committee, and other governmental entities.
  • Contribute to the design and continual evaluation of comprehensive curricula across all levels of education and training.
  • Ensure the creation of a safe and supportive environment that fosters well-being while promoting respectful and responsible behavior throughout the school.
  • Encourage a collaborative team culture, valuing the contributions of each member, promoting full participation, and acknowledging staff efforts.
  • Provide and solicit constructive feedback to the team, with a focus on capacity building.
  • Oversee and manage the daily operations of the school and its staff in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
  • Assign staff as needed to ensure the timely completion of special projects.
  • Monitor school programs and initiatives, taking corrective actions when necessary to ensure the effective use of financial, human, and capital resources.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to meet reporting deadlines and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare reports for funding agencies related to financial support for programs and activities.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Education, Experience, Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in education or a related field, combined with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, which includes 3 years of classroom teaching in adult basic skills and 2 years of supervisory experience; or a suitable mix of experience and training demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role.
  • Principal certification and/or a commitment to obtaining Principal’s certification.
  • A valid BC Teacher's Certificate in good standing and at least five (5) years of experience in a relevant area.
  • A comprehensive understanding of First Nations adult and post-secondary education, along with First Nations issues in BC.
  • Familiarity with Ministry Curriculum and Assessment Documents.
  • Experience in a First Nation educational context with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
  • Knowledge of governmental policies, programs, and curricula.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting tight deadlines.
  • A valid BC driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • A current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening, is mandatory as a condition of employment.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
