Prep Phase Leader
About This Role
HARROW INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL APPI, JAPAN
Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan, Harrow Appi is redefining the standard for British international full-boarding education in East Asia. We provide a robust academic curriculum, personalized mentoring, values-driven holistic education, and unique outdoor learning experiences facilitated by our exceptional access to the surrounding Japanese mountains.
In this serene setting, our high-achieving students thrive both academically and personally. Our dedicated educators guide learners towards outstanding academic results, paving their way to prestigious international universities. We offer a distinctive co-curricular program that engages students in sports, creative arts, and service learning, all while fostering their core values and behaviors. Our sports academies specialize in alpine sports, swimming, tennis, golf, and mountain biking.
Having commenced operations in August 2022 for students in Years 7-10, we are now looking for an exceptional Teacher to join our team starting in August 2025. This role will involve pastoral responsibilities for prep students (Years 7-9) and is open to applicants from all subject areas. We are particularly interested in educators who are passionate about working with young people through a holistic educational approach.
Ideal candidates will embrace the unique challenges associated with establishing a new school and will adapt well to a mountain lifestyle. They should be open to blending their personal and professional lives during the academic term. While familiarity with the British independent education sector and experience in boarding schools are advantageous, they are not mandatory.
If you envision yourself thriving in a lively residential mountain school, engaging in teaching during the day, supporting students in the boarding houses, leading activities, and enjoying golfing or mountain pursuits in your leisure time, we would love to hear from you.
We specifically seek candidates who meet the following criteria:
- A relevant education degree or a bachelor’s degree with UK QTS.
- A proven track record of teaching experience in reputable schools, with knowledge of the National Curriculum of England and IGCSE/GCSE syllabi (A Levels will be introduced from 2024).
- The capability to mentor highly capable students, assisting them in their journey to top universities.
- A commitment to boarding life and a holistic, values-centered educational philosophy.
- Proficiency in supporting students learning English as an additional language.
Safeguarding our students is fundamental to our mission. All appointments will be contingent upon:
- Acceptable police checks (or equivalents) from both your home country and any countries where you have previously worked.
- Appropriate references from current and former employers, verified through direct phone conversations with each referee during the short-listing process.
The Appi environment is best suited for enthusiastic professionals whose personal circumstances allow them to embrace life in rural, mountainous Japan. We are looking for resilient educators who view the challenges of mountain living, regardless of the season, as part of an exciting adventure, enjoying the stunning beauty of Japan’s natural landscape throughout the year and the opportunity for extensive outdoor activities.
Successful candidates will be offered two-year renewable contracts with competitive employment terms, excellent working conditions, and access to the Appi resort.
