About This Role
Sherborne Schools Group is on the lookout for an innovative and passionate Head of EAL. This pivotal role is essential in providing comprehensive academic, social, and linguistic support for pupils whose first language is not English, enabling them to excel in the environment of a UK boarding school.
The Head of EAL is responsible for the strategic advancement of EAL services within the institution, crafting a cohesive curriculum that equips students with the necessary language skills for successful engagement with the broader academic offerings.
Responsibilities
- Supervising diagnostic assessments
- Coordinating tailored intervention strategies
- Ensuring high-quality instruction that fosters prompt and enduring language acquisition
- Collaborating closely with subject departments to provide insights on effective classroom techniques, scaffolding, and differentiation
Additionally, the Head of EAL holds a crucial pastoral role, aiding international students in navigating the cultural and linguistic challenges of boarding life. By fostering strong connections with House staff, tutors, and parents, both domestically and internationally, the post-holder guarantees clear communication and consistent support mechanisms for every student.
They advocate for cultural inclusion throughout the school community, encouraging intercultural understanding and celebrating linguistic diversity. As part of the broader academic leadership team, the Head of EAL plays an integral role in developing school-wide policies, training staff, and contributing to strategic initiatives.
They ensure that the requirements of EAL learners are thoroughly integrated into the school’s mission to empower girls to become global citizens, equipped with the resilience, courage, and creativity to effect change.
Although the primary workplace will be Sherborne Girls School, the successful candidate will also be expected to engage with and support initiatives across the wider Sherborne Schools Group. Occasionally, they may be called upon to work at other schools or locations within the Group to address business needs.
