Position Overview:

The Algonquins of Barriere Lake are on the lookout for a passionate and experienced teacher for Grade 5, 6, and Junior High to become a vital part of our educational team for the 2026-2027 school year. This position requires you to work collaboratively and respectfully with our students, families, and community. Reporting directly to the Principal, your responsibilities will include delivering effective instruction, overseeing student activities, and providing educational services, as well as supporting extracurricular initiatives when needed.

Your teaching will adhere to the Quebec provincial (MEQ) and local curriculum while incorporating the culture and traditions of ABL into your lessons. This means adapting teaching materials and methods to meet the diverse needs of your students. Key duties include developing annual, monthly, and daily lesson plans, evaluating and reporting on students' intellectual, social, and academic growth, and maintaining high academic and behavioral standards for each student and class.

A commitment to punctuality and student success is crucial. You will engage in school supervisory and extracurricular teams, including various committees. Regular consultations with the Principal and colleagues are necessary to support all students. You will also establish, display, and uphold a classroom code of conduct, actively involve families and community members in classroom activities, and communicate any notable situations regarding students to the Principal and parents in writing.

Formal updates to parents will be provided at least 10 times a year, supplemented by a minimum of two informal communications. Any safety issues or incidents occurring in the school or on the playground must be reported immediately to the Principal or designated staff member. Adherence to all ABL Board of Education policies and directives is mandatory. You will develop an annual professional growth plan aimed at areas for improvement and participate in both formal and informal Professional Development and in-service training. It is essential to maintain accurate records as per ABL policies and the Principal’s requirements, as well as to actively participate in all staff meetings and any additional assigned duties.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or an undergraduate degree accompanied by a teaching certificate
  • Must be a member in good standing with the MEQ (or able to obtain such status)
  • Knowledge of ABL and/or a willingness to learn about and teach ABL

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience working with First Nation culture and children
  • Familiarity with the MEQ curriculum
  • Strong dedication to school success
  • A positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to go above and beyond for student achievement
  • Effective skills in planning, organization, and record-keeping
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and empower students
  • Proficient in computer use with advanced knowledge of educational software and functions
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development

Signing bonuses may be available for qualified candidates. Please note that accommodation is provided at no cost, and every other Friday is designated as a half workday. This contract may be subject to annual renewal based on Teacher Evaluation Assessment.

Compensation
