Kohl’s School is a reputable First Nation institution serving over 70 students from Junior Preschool through Grade 12. This year, Heart Lake First Nation has broadened its educational offerings to include middle school programming and is seeking a full-time teacher for Language Arts in grades 6-9 as well as Senior High English. Position Summary:
Kohl’s School is actively searching for an enthusiastic and skilled English Language Arts Teacher (Grades 6–9) along with some High School coursework to become part of our collaborative and high-achieving teaching team for the current and upcoming school years. The ideal candidate will possess a strong grasp of the Alberta English Language Arts Programs of Study and assist students in building strong literacy skills, critical thinking, and effective communication abilities. The teacher will encourage critical literacy, creative expression, and thoughtful engagement with a wide range of texts while collaborating closely with colleagues to align with the educational objectives of Heart Lake First Nation.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead Effective Learning
- Develop both short- and long-term English Language Arts curriculum plans in alignment with Alberta Programs of Study and the Virtual Learning System.
- Design and implement engaging, inquiry-based, and concept-driven learning experiences that connect students with various literary, informational, and media texts.
- Teach reading comprehension strategies, writing processes, oral communication skills, and critical literacy explicitly.
- Support students in developing their voice, clarity, and accuracy in written and oral expression.
- Integrate diverse texts and perspectives to foster inclusion, empathy, and global awareness.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the varied needs and learning profiles of students, including providing interventions and enrichment.
- Use a variety of formative and summative assessment methods to gauge literacy skills, thinking, and communication.
- Analyze student work and assessment data to guide instructional strategies and support student growth.
Foster Strong Relationships & A Respectful Classroom Environment
- Create a positive classroom climate based on respect, belonging, curiosity, and high expectations.
- Support student well-being, confidence, perseverance, and language development throughout their learning journey.
- Apply consistent classroom organization and management techniques that promote engagement, safety, and learning.
- Maintain clear, respectful, and professional communication with students and their families.
- Build strong partnerships with families to enhance student learning and success.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Education;
- Eligible for or currently holding an Alberta Teaching Certificate or Alberta Interim Teaching Certificate;
- Proficient in English with strong written and oral communication abilities;
- Valid first-aid certification or a willingness to obtain certification;
Preferred Assets:
- Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle or secondary level;
- Knowledge of First Nation traditions and culture;
- Experience with inquiry-based and concept-driven teaching methodologies;
- Proven ability to utilize instructional technology to enhance literacy learning;
