In this role, you will be charged with establishing, developing, and managing the effective operation of the Library Learning Commons, which includes the Library Makerspace and Study Rooms. You will also be responsible for imparting essential library, research, and literacy skills to individuals, small groups, and entire classes across all age levels, working in conjunction with the Local Librarian, Secondary Librarian, and Library Assistant(s). You will create and maintain an inspiring and intellectually engaging learning environment that bolsters the school's educational initiatives, while also acquiring resources that align with the school's goals. Your aim will be to ensure the Library Learning Commons operates as a hub for teaching, learning, and community engagement at CIS.

Job Description:

Responsibilities of the Teacher-Librarian:

  • Implement assessment strategies for learning within the library program, in line with Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools.
  • Facilitate opportunities for critical literacy development.
  • Follow CISS policies when selecting learning resources for the library.
  • Adhere to established protocols regarding any concerns related to controversial or sensitive materials in learning resources.
  • Foster a welcoming atmosphere with flexible spaces that promote collaborative learning.
  • Curate a culturally inclusive and curriculum-relevant collection of materials.
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and school policies in both physical and virtual library environments.
  • Advocate for the integration of assistive technologies and devices within the library.
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers in the design, delivery, and evaluation of programs.
  • Provide explicit instruction on transferable skills such as search strategies and resource evaluation.
  • Develop pathfinders and reading lists that support the curriculum.
  • Apply the Achievement Chart criteria of Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application to research and inquiry processes.
  • Utilize various assessment tools, including anchor charts, organizers and templates, checklists, rubrics, portfolios, and surveys.
  • Instruct students in using software and digital applications for learning, collaboration, and knowledge creation as required.
  • Design project-based research assignments that deliver authentic learning experiences, working alongside classroom teachers for implementation.
  • Demonstrate models of inquiry/research.
  • Create lessons and units that reflect the stages of inquiry.
  • Implement a gradual release of responsibility.
