Boarding House Master or Mistress
About This Role
HARROW INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL APPI, JAPAN
Situated in the picturesque mountains of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan, Harrow Appi is transforming the landscape of British international full-boarding education in East Asia. We offer a challenging academic curriculum, individualized tutoring, values-centric holistic education, and exceptional outdoor learning experiences in the stunning Japanese mountains.
Our high-achieving students flourish in both academic pursuits and extracurricular activities, set against a backdrop of breathtaking hills. Our dedicated staff is committed to guiding students toward exceptional academic achievements, helping them secure placements at their desired international universities. A unique co-curricular program engages students in sports, creative arts, and service learning while promoting essential values and behaviors. Our sports academies focus on alpine sports, swimming, tennis, golf, and mountain biking.
Since our inception in August 2022, we have been serving students across all Year Groups from 7 to 13, and we are currently seeking a skilled House Master or Mistress to join our team in August 2026. We are particularly interested in educators who demonstrate a genuine passion for working with young people within a holistic educational framework.
Ideal Candidates Will
- Embrace the challenges associated with establishing a new school and adapt well to a mountain lifestyle.
- Be open to integrating their personal and professional lives seamlessly during the academic term.
- Have experience in the British independent or high-quality international education sectors, and those with boarding experience, although these are not strict requirements.
If you can imagine yourself thriving in a lively residential mountain-school environment—teaching during the day, supporting students in the boarding houses, leading activities, and enjoying leisure time in the mountains or playing golf—we encourage you to apply via the WhatSchool platform.
We Are Specifically Looking For:
- An appropriate educational degree or a bachelor's degree paired with UK QTS.
- A proven track record of teaching in reputable schools, along with familiarity with the National Curriculum of England and the IGCSE/GCSE and A Level syllabi.
- The ability to mentor high-achieving students, assisting them on their path to prestigious universities.
- A commitment to boarding and a holistic, values-driven education.
- Experience in supporting students learning English as an additional language.
The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. Employment offers will be contingent upon:
- Acceptable police checks (or equivalent) from your home country and any other countries where you have worked.
- Positive references from current and previous employers, which will be verified through personal phone calls to each referee during the short-listing process.
The Appi setting and the nature of the school attract vibrant professionals who can fully embrace life in rural, mountainous Japan. We seek resilient educators who see the challenges of mountain living, regardless of the season, as part of their journey, with the rewards of experiencing Japan's stunning natural beauty across all four seasons and engaging in a variety of outdoor sports.
Successful candidates will be offered two-year renewable contracts with highly competitive employment conditions, excellent working environments, and access to the Appi resort.
