About This Role

The Deputy Head of Secondary plays a vital role in the school’s executive leadership team, collaborating closely with the Head of Secondary and Senior Leadership Team to foster academic success, operational efficiency, and a nurturing learning environment. The selected candidate may also take on school-wide strategic responsibilities, aiding in the advancement of overall school improvement goals.

Key Responsibilities


Actively advocate for and embody the ethos, vision, and standards of excellence representative of the GEMS Education Core Values.


Partner with the Head of Secondary to establish and integrate effective, innovative, and globally pertinent teaching and learning methodologies.


Assist in the execution of the school’s strategic vision aimed at enhancing educational quality and ongoing improvement.


Ensure that GEMS Core Values are woven into all curricular and co-curricular programs, promoting a culture of aspiration, respect, and inclusivity.

Teaching, Learning and Curriculum


Spearhead the creation of robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks to measure the quality of teaching and learning, implementing targeted improvement actions as necessary.


Conduct lesson observations and performance evaluations based on identified needs, delivering focused developmental feedback that aligns with school priorities.


Collaborate with Heads of Department and coordinators to ensure continuity, progression, and adherence to regulatory standards within the curriculum.


Ensure the curriculum remains adaptive to student needs while fulfilling required standards and content frameworks.

Staff Development and Leadership


Foster the professional development of staff through coaching, mentoring, and structured professional development that aligns with specific improvement goals.


Preside over meetings, lead working groups, and engage in whole-school leadership initiatives.


Cultivate leadership capabilities throughout the Secondary phase, contributing to succession planning and talent development efforts.

Student Experience and Enrichment


Manage the effective delivery of support programs, enrichment activities, educational excursions, assemblies, and special events that promote student learning and well-being.


Collaborate with pastoral and inclusion teams to guarantee a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning atmosphere for all students.

Community Engagement and Operations


Establish strong relationships with parents and the broader community through clear, consistent communication and engagement strategies.


Coordinate with the Registrar concerning admissions processes, including student induction, assessment, and transition protocols.


Assist in organizing Parent-Teacher meetings, school events, charity programs, and broader GEMS network activities.

Strategic and Operational Leadership


Contribute to budget planning and resource management, ensuring the effective allocation of staff and facilities.


Fulfill a teaching allocation and undertake other professional responsibilities as delegated by the Head of Secondary and Senior Leadership Team.


Ensure consistent implementation of all GEMS policies, procedures, and professional standards.


Exhibit flexibility and dedication, acknowledging that senior leadership duties may extend beyond regular school hours.


Participate in leadership meetings and serve on committees as needed.


Perform any additional tasks reasonably assigned by direct or dotted-line managers.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
