About This Role

GEMS American Academy in Qatar is seeking a dedicated and skilled professional to become part of our Lower School Elementary Counseling Team.

The start date for this position is August 2026.

Key Responsibilities:


Uphold and promote the ethos and standards of excellence as outlined in the GEMS Core Values.


Deliver the designated curriculum, showcasing comprehensive and current knowledge of subject matter.


Design and implement engaging lessons that inspire students. Create and employ suitable materials and classroom settings to accommodate diverse learning styles.


Provide documented evidence of lesson planning and preparation upon request. Maintain comprehensive records of curriculum and yearly plans, attendance, teaching resources, assessment plans, etc.


Ensure adherence to GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct at all times.


Instruct students based on their unique needs, utilizing appropriate teaching strategies that address varying abilities, including late entrants, ESL learners, students with lower academic performance, and those who are gifted and talented.


Assign and grade tasks. Evaluate, document, and report on students' academic growth, progress, and achievements, using assessments to tailor the curriculum to individual student needs.


Demonstrate proficiency in the use of media and technology in the classroom.


Support the overall progress and well-being of students while providing educational guidance.


Engage with external parties when necessary (e.g., officials from the Ministry of Education).


Take part in appraisal and Performance Management processes as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD).


Collaborate with colleagues to prepare and develop teaching materials, resources, study courses, and pastoral arrangements.


Participate in and lead co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in the school, fostering positive working relationships through active leadership and the sharing of ideas, materials, and experiences.


Oversee and promote safe and appropriate student behavior. Develop and implement strategies encouraging self-discipline and managing disruptive behavior.


Exemplify and promote cultural awareness and understanding, fostering a passion for learning.


Assist in organizing and planning school events and functions (e.g., inter-house competitions, concerts, school plays, prize days, etc.).


Communicate and meet with parents regularly to promote the GEMS philosophy and core values; keep parents informed about students’ progress while maintaining confidentiality regarding student information.


Demonstrate initiative and commitment beyond the standard work hours when tasks require additional effort.


Attend staff meetings and participate in committees as necessary.

Successful candidates will need to:


Embodiment and modeling of our core values: respect, innovation, leadership, purpose, and tenacity.


Possess a MA or Masters OR B.Ed or Bachelors degree in a relevant area (Psychology; Guidance Counseling) with PGCE/PGDE or an equivalent Level 5 teaching qualification.


Have familiarity with the use of ICT in educational settings to enhance teaching and learning.


Be a committed and skilled educator with robust subject knowledge in the relevant area.


Exhibit excellent communication abilities, capable of building relationships with students and colleagues while contributing to the broader school community.


Have at least 2 years of teaching experience in the relevant subject area or age group.
