TEACHER OF MANDARINType: Maternity CoverLocation: The High School of Glasgow Senior SchoolSalary: Based on the Scottish Teaching Pay Scales, commensurate with experienceApplication: Complete our application form and return to vacancies@hsog.co.ukClosing date: Friday 8 May 2026The High School of Glasgow is seeking to employ a dynamic, enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of Mandarin (Maternity Cover) from August 2026 to join our highly successful Modern Languages Department.The department currently consists of four full time teachers, three part time teachers and one language assistant. One of the full time teachers is an Assistant Head of House.The department comprises six classrooms and a departmental base. All classrooms are equipped with modern audio-visual technology including SmartBoards, and all pupils have access to iPads.All pupils are given the opportunity to study French, German, Mandarin and Spanish.French is currently introduced into the Junior School curriculum at Primary 1 level and is a core subject in the Senior School until the end of Second Year. Most pupils study French up to Fourth Year and a good number continue to Higher and Advanced Higher. Mandarin was introduced in 2020 and has grown steadily in uptake over the last six years.German, Mandarin and Spanish are introduced to all First and Second Year pupils (two periods weekly, on a rotational basis) and become an option from Third Year onwards. There are presentations in all languages up to and including Advanced Higher. Italian and Japanese are offered as part of the DofE Award Scheme.In Session 2025-26, there are fifteen pupils studying National 5 Mandarin in Third Year and four studying in Fourth year. Two pupils are studying Higher Mandarin. The plan is to introduce Advanced Higher next session.The department has consistently achieved excellent results in national examinations, with a 100% pass rate in National 5 Mandarin in 2025.The successful applicant will be a committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Mandarin with high standards of professionalism, who should be willing to make a contribution to the extra-curricular life of the School.The appointment will begin on Thursday 13 August 2026. Candidates must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
