Principal Study Teacher of Piano

We are in search of an energetic and dedicated piano instructor eager to share their expertise and enthusiasm. You will be part of the School's keyboard department, primarily teaching first study piano students who are likely to advance to leading conservatoires or universities in the UK or internationally.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to cultivate and sustain a warm, respectful rapport with young individuals, while recognizing the professional boundaries necessary between staff and students. Acting as a positive role model, you will exhibit self-motivation and strong interpersonal skills. As an accomplished performer, you should also have experience working with musically talented young people in either an academic or musical setting. The position entails one-on-one teaching.

You will actively contribute to promoting the School as part of a strategy to attract new students. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to engage with students, parents, and staff throughout the institution. Maintaining high personal and professional standards is crucial, including an understanding of confidentiality issues relevant to school environments. A demonstrated awareness of safeguarding and child protection legislation is required, and you will be expected to fully commit to best practices in safeguarding.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

This is a part-time position commencing in September 2026, with hours to be agreed upon with the Head of Keyboard and the Director of Music. The hourly wage is £45.31. The children of staff members are not permitted to attend the School except through the standard admissions and audition processes. All positions are subject to regular performance reviews. Staff can enjoy complimentary lunch during term-time at the School.

JOB TITLE: Principal Study Teacher of Piano

All staff ultimately report to the Principal, with your line manager being the Head of Keyboard, and all instrumental teaching staff reporting to the Director of Music.

This job specification outlines the main duties of the role as of the current drafting. Specific responsibilities include:

Responsibilities include:

  • Drawing from your own experience and teaching, provide students with insights into the skills required for a successful career as a musician.
  • Enhance your knowledge of materials and repertoire suited to students at various stages of their musical journey.
  • Design individual lessons and select appropriate repertoire for your students.
  • Pursue your professional development by obtaining additional teaching or performance qualifications and continuing your own performance endeavors.
  • Coordinate with the School Timetabler in advance to establish teaching dates and availability.
  • Conduct individual and/or group lessons, including chamber music coaching and faculty classes, integrating aspects of general musicianship such as ear training and theory, along with instrumental technique, interpretation, and contextual material.
  • Prepare students for performances, examinations, auditions, and festivals.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Keyboard.
  • Maintain an accurate and regular register of student attendance and absence, to be submitted to the Head of Keyboard each term.
  • Facilitate performance opportunities for your students by engaging with various auditions, concerts, recitals, competitions, and events within the School.
  • Communicate with parents and students through the School's reporting system and engage with all Purcell School colleagues via School email addresses.
  • Foster relationships with schools, local authority music services, and other relevant organizations.
