Health and Safety Officer – Role Overview
The Health and Safety Officer plays a crucial role in implementing, managing, and monitoring the school’s Health and Safety Policy to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and to uphold the highest safety standards for all individuals involved.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the creation, execution, and ongoing enhancement of health and safety systems, policies, procedures, documentation, and practices throughout the school.
- Ensure alignment with all health and safety standards established by ADEK, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC) / Department of Health (DoH), and other pertinent government and regulatory bodies.
- Protect the well-being of students, staff, contractors, visitors, and all stakeholders by formulating and enforcing clear, compliant policies and procedures for activities conducted on-site and related to the school.
- Guarantee that all personnel and students receive sufficient training, information, supervision, and guidance on workplace hazards and safe practices relevant to the school environment and specific areas of work.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and responsibility by promoting awareness of potential hazards (including fire safety, laboratory safety, and traffic management) through effective communication, consultation, and engagement with staff and stakeholders.
- Develop, implement, and sustain an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) in accordance with ADPHC compliance standards, ensuring timely periodic submissions to ADPHC/DoH and other relevant authorities based on the school’s risk classification.
- Create and uphold a well-defined health and safety leadership structure within the school, incorporating delegation mechanisms and ensuring alignment with external regulatory mandates.
- Provide appropriate induction, handover, and continuous health and safety training for employees, contractors, and relevant stakeholders.
- Conduct hazard identification, perform risk assessments, and apply effective control measures to mitigate risks in critical areas such as school transportation, student pick-up and drop-off, and traffic flow management.
- Develop, maintain, and periodically review the Emergency Response Plan and Occupational Injuries Register.
- Keep detailed records of incident investigations, ensure accurate reporting through ADEK and ADPHC electronic OSH reporting systems, and submit reports promptly.
- Collaborate closely with the School Safeguarding Committee or Safeguarding Lead, in line with the ADEK School Safeguarding Policy, to guarantee adequate supervision, visual coverage, and proactive measures for incident prevention and response.
