Head of Physics
About This Role
About this Role
We are excited to share a remarkable opportunity for a visionary and motivating Head of Physics to join our esteemed Science Faculty, where you will guide, develop, and invigorate a thriving department.
The Physics Department
The Physics department is a vibrant and collaborative group of ten dedicated teachers, supported by proficient technicians who enhance the learning experience. Located in our well-equipped Science block, the department features five spacious laboratories designed to ignite curiosity and exploration. Practical work is fundamental to our educational approach, and students gain access to an impressive variety of equipment, including class sets of touch-screen data-logging devices with a wide range of sensors, ensuring that every lesson is interactive, engaging, and rooted in genuine scientific investigation.
We adhere to the Edexcel International GCSE (iGCSE) syllabus, offering both Triple and Double Award pathways. At A-level, Physics is a favored subject, following the OCR specification.
Co-curricular activities encompass participation in the British Physics Olympiad, as well as Gold, Silver, and Bronze CREST Awards, Arkwright Scholarship applications, weekly extension sessions for aspiring university candidates, including an engineering program, and weekly Physics clinics that provide additional support.
Working at Hurst
Hurst is among the UK's leading independent schools, fostering a vibrant and supportive environment for both students and staff. With nearly 1,300 students across our Senior and Prep Schools, we blend academic ambition with a strong community spirit and a rich co-curricular program.
Hurst is a place of genuine momentum. From the classroom to the sports field, and the theatre to the boarding house, life here is diverse, enriching, and continually rewarding.
Our community strives for excellence—not as a destination, but as a daily practice. Those who thrive here embody the same ambition, resilience, and commitment we expect from our students.
We don’t merely teach; we coach, mentor, direct, lead, and inspire, often all within the same day! Your role here will extend far beyond your primary responsibilities, making it truly fulfilling. If you are someone who thrives on variety, is motivated by challenges, and is genuinely excited about the opportunity to shape young minds both in and out of the classroom, you will fit right in.
You will enjoy working in a beautiful rural setting, while remaining well-connected. We are just 20 minutes from the vibrant city and beaches of Brighton & Hove, with London less than an hour away by train. We also offer a comprehensive range of staff benefits, complimentary meals during term time, access to our outstanding sports facilities, wellbeing initiatives, and extensive opportunities for professional development.
This is more than just a job; it is a commitment to something greater. For the right individual, there is no more exhilarating place to be.
