The ideal candidate will take on the dual role of teacher and tutor, adhering to the responsibilities detailed in the general job description.
Head of Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA
In your capacity as Head of Department, you will be responsible for making well-informed and effective decisions regarding the planning, execution, and evaluation of both the curriculum and extracurricular activities. This position requires leadership and management of both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the organization of departmental resources, with overall responsibility for the quality of student work, outcomes, and behavior within the department.
Department Planning
Working alongside the Principal:
- Create a Development and Improvement Plan that aligns with the School Development and Improvement Plan, detailing the department's short, medium, and long-term goals;
- Oversee the implementation and evaluation of the Development and Improvement Plan; and
- Prepare the department for both internal and external evaluations, including the KHDA inspection.
Curriculum
- Develop and oversee schemes of work for Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA that comply with statutory requirements while reflecting the school's objectives, policies, and ethos.
- Collaborate with department staff and the Curriculum Manager/Head of School to review and revise schemes of work in response to new methodologies, updated examination syllabi, or changes in school or national policies.
- Ensure a high-quality extracurricular sports program that meets the diverse needs of students.
- Tailor schemes of work to suit the individual needs of learners.
- Work with the SENCO regarding students with special educational needs.
- Ensure continuity and progression in schemes of work regarding:
- Curriculum objectives and content;
- Enhancing cross-curricular skills; and
- Teaching and learning strategies.
- Ensure that the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA programs build upon the skills, attitudes, knowledge, and concepts established in EYFS and primary education and continue through to post-16.
- Assist the Curriculum Manager/Head of School in promoting cross-curricular themes and skills.
- Encourage teaching and learning strategies that engage students and cater to individual needs, leveraging effective practices from across the faculty.
- Source a variety of educational resources.
- Collaborate with the Librarian to obtain materials that support the curriculum.
- Establish and monitor assessment processes that comply with school policy and legal requirements.
- Evaluate the suitability of courses from various examination boards and select those that best meet the students’ needs and aspirations.
- Organize educational excursions that support curriculum goals.
- Contribute to the planning of the school timetable as necessary.
- Stay updated on developments in Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA and relay this information to the Principal.
- Work in conjunction with other Heads of Department on comprehensive school curriculum planning.
- Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to prepare the school calendar.
Learners
- Set and uphold high standards for learners.
- Ensure compliance with school policies regarding behavior, work presentation, and homework completion.
- Establish protocols for assessing and recording student progress in alignment with school and national policy.
- Ensure that student records are consistently transferred from year to year.
- Organize teaching groups into suitable sets.
- Provide information and advice to students and their parents about courses offered by the department at Key Stage 1, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5.
