About This Role
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher to join our team. In this crucial role, you will contribute to a school where 96% of our students are local Emirati learners, many of whom are acquiring English as a second language. The responsibilities of the EAL position include:
- Curriculum Accessibility: Utilizing WIDA standards to enrich the American Common Core curriculum, ensuring that complex concepts in Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies are accessible to all students without sacrificing academic rigor.
- Literacy & Reading Development: Implementing targeted phonics and decoding strategies for younger students while cultivating advanced inferential reading skills for secondary students. This involves selecting culturally relevant and engaging texts that connect with our local context to improve reading stamina.
- Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP): Teaching academic vocabulary and complex sentence structures directly to enhance comprehension across different subjects, allowing students to advance from basic understanding to deeper critical analysis.
- Oracy & Verbal Fluency: Establishing "talk-rich" learning environments that focus on the development of oral language. This includes structured debates, Socratic seminars, and oral presentations to help students build confidence in speaking English and improve their listening abilities.
- Linguistic Advocacy: Implementing "translanguaging" strategies that acknowledge students' home languages as valuable resources for achieving English proficiency, while respecting the cultural identities within our community.
- Data-Driven Support: Administering MAP Growth and WIDA assessments to create Individual Language Plans (ILPs) that track student progress from BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills) to CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency).
- Collaborative Coaching: Serving as a "language architect" to advance the school's EAL strategy in collaboration with homeroom and subject teachers, co-planning and demonstrating differentiated instruction that addresses the needs of every student in the mainstream classroom.
