About This Role

GEMS American Academy in Qatar is looking for a passionate and experienced individual to join our Lower School Elementary Counseling Team.

The position is set to commence in August 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and promote the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in the GEMS Core Values.
  • Deliver the assigned curriculum, demonstrating thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Create and implement dynamic lessons that motivate students. Develop and utilize appropriate materials and classroom environments to support various learning styles.
  • Provide documented evidence of lesson planning and preparation when requested. Keep detailed records of the curriculum, yearly plans, attendance, teaching resources, assessment plans, and more.
  • Consistently adhere to GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.
  • Teach students according to their individual needs, employing suitable teaching strategies that cater to different abilities, including late entrants, ESL learners, students with lower academic performance, and those who are gifted and talented.
  • Assign and evaluate assignments. Monitor, document, and report on students' academic growth, progress, and achievements, using assessments to adapt the curriculum to meet individual student needs.
  • Demonstrate adeptness in utilizing media and technology within the classroom.
  • Support the overall development and well-being of students while offering educational guidance.
  • Engage with external parties when necessary (e.g., officials from the Ministry of Education).
  • Participate in appraisal and Performance Management processes as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create and develop teaching materials, resources, study courses, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Take part in and lead co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at the school, building positive working relationships through active leadership and the sharing of ideas, materials, and experiences.
  • Monitor and promote safe and appropriate student behavior, developing and implementing strategies that encourage self-discipline and manage disruptive behavior.
  • Exemplify and promote cultural awareness and understanding, igniting a passion for learning.
  • Assist in the organization and planning of school events and functions (e.g., inter-house competitions, concerts, school plays, prize days, etc.).
  • Communicate regularly with parents to promote the GEMS philosophy and core values; keep parents informed about students’ progress while ensuring confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Show initiative and commitment beyond standard working hours when necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and engage in committees as required.

Successful candidates will need to:

  • Embodiment and modeling of our core values: respect, innovation, leadership, purpose, and tenacity.
  • Hold a MA or Masters OR B.Ed or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Psychology; Guidance Counseling) with PGCE/PGDE or an equivalent Level 5 teaching qualification.
  • Be familiar with the use of ICT in educational settings to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Be a dedicated and skilled educator with strong subject knowledge in the relevant area.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills, able to build relationships with students and colleagues while contributing to the wider school community.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in the relevant subject area or age group.
