About This Role
In line with HKIS’ Vision statement, Middle School educators aim to cultivate learning environments that foster a socially engaged community of collaborative, creative, and resilient learners. Middle School teachers are tasked with empowering each student to exhibit courage and confidence when faced with challenges, while also developing the essential skills needed to adapt and thrive as learners.
Middle School teachers recognize the vital importance of relationships in crafting meaningful learning experiences for students both within and beyond the classroom. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Middle School educator who is enthusiastic about implementing inquiry-based pedagogy in their teaching. They will inspire and motivate students to gain knowledge and skills, aiming to foster conceptual understanding and critical thinking. This individual will work closely with their teaching teams, learning support specialists, subject area teachers, curriculum leaders, coaches, and administrators to create integrated learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of each student, providing enhanced choice and applying principles of differentiation.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Professional Knowledge:
• Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the subject(s) and understanding of HKIS' Shared Philosophy of Education. For HKIS educators, this encompasses instructional planning, curriculum reflection, knowledge of tools and resources, understanding developmental characteristics of students, and staying current with pedagogical trends.
Instructional Strategies:
• The methods by which teachers cultivate a culture of learning, engage students, and deliver content. This includes flexibility in material selection, appropriate technology use, and diverse presentation, grouping, and pacing techniques tailored to student learning needs.
Management:
• The prioritization, organization, and allocation of time and resources to foster an effective learning environment. This involves managing one's own tasks, planning for others, anticipating needs, and adjusting resources as necessary. For HKIS educators, this covers classroom management.
Assessment:
• The evaluation of student comprehension through a balanced approach of developmentally suitable formative and summative assessments aligned with UbD Stage 1 elements (including defined standards, enduring understandings, knowledge and skills, misconceptions, and academic vocabulary). HKIS faculty provide constructive feedback to students and parents to encourage learning and utilize assessment results for instructional planning.
Communication:
• The effective verbal and non-verbal communication within the HKIS community (students, parents, colleagues) in both formal and informal contexts, ensuring clarity and accuracy of information. HKIS educators are skilled in selecting the most suitable medium and actively listening to foster a mutual understanding of needs, issues, and concerns.
Collaboration and Professional Practice:
• The approach individuals take to build, enhance, and sustain strong learning communities and professional relationships. Sharing insights about students, curriculum, and resources contributes to the overall success of the HKIS community.
Schoolwide Competencies:
• Teaching practices align with HKIS’ Foundational Documents, including the Learning Principles and Practices and the Assessment, Grading, and Reporting Philosophy.
• As a Christian-based institution, we hire Christian educators and administrators, as well as individuals from other faiths. HKIS is looking for candidates who are engaged with complex questions of faith and spirituality and are eager to learn and interact with individuals of various faith traditions.
• Global minded: Values and respects diverse cultures, with a sense of global stewardship and responsibility.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Bachelor of Education.
Experience:
• Relevant Middle School teaching certification.
• Experience in a leading international school with an American-style education is preferred.
Skills:
• At least 5 years of teaching experience.
