OBJECTIVE:

The prime responsibility of the Deputy Head of Boarding is to assist the Head of Boarding to provide a welcoming, safe and secure environment for all boarders. The Deputy Head of Boarding will work collaboratively with the Head of Boarding to oversee the wellbeing and welfare of our boarders and oversee the management of daily operations, rosters and leadership of staff in the Boarding House when the Head of Boarding is not present. After-hours and weekend work is required to meet the requirements of the role. 

 

The Deputy Head of Boarding will also be responsible for designing and planning the weekend boarding programme for full boarders as well as running the Duke of Edinburgh programme. The teaching responsibility in DT and Art, and taking CCA activities, will be allocated based on the school's needs. 

 

The position is residential, and the post holder will be required to live in the accommodation as specified by the Head of Boarding during term time and contribute to all duties while pupils are living in school. In periods of absence from the House during term time, the post holder will arrange cover and all such absences should be pre-approved by the Head of Boarding.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

BOARDING HOUSE MANAGEMENT

  • Lead, model and maintain the values and philosophy of the school, as manifest through pupil culture, engagement and conduct

  • Ensure appropriate information and records relating to boarders and Boarding House operations are maintained to a high standard, and in accordance with school policy

  • Ensure the planning and coordination of all transportation needs for the boarders.

  • Ensure Boarding House operations are conducted in line with documented policies and procedures, especially the National Minimum Standards of the UK.

  • Coordinate and lead initiatives to foster boarder leadership opportunities and development within the Boarding House

  • Proactively contribute to a culture of safety, through the provision of strong health and safety policies and practices, incident reporting and risk mitigation. Ensure the Duty of Care to all boarders and staff is always maintained.

 

STAFF LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

  • Proactively contribute to a constructive workplace culture, where all staff are working to achieve the mission and strategic objectives of the school, that is reflective of the school values.

  • Lead, coach and support staff to promote wellbeing and support high performance

  • Provide regular and effective communication to staff through staff briefings.  Ensure adequate regular meetings are provided to lead and support the objectives of the Boarding House operations, as well as pupil learning and wellbeing needs. 

  • Oversee the planning and delivery of appropriate resources to support Boarding House requirements, ensuring contemporary human resource management practices are exercised in accordance with school policies, including but not limited to recruitment and induction, performance planning and professional development, workforce management planning (including leave) and performance management.

  • Continue to embed a strong culture of safeguarding children and young people through the Boarding House, with an ongoing focus on child safe policies, procedures and practices. Support the ongoing learning and development of staff in child safe practices.

 

DAY SCHOOL CONNECTIVITY

  • Maintain formal structures and informal networks with Form Tutors, Heads of House, teachers and school leaders to ensure the academic and pastoral care needs of boarders are managed effectively

  • Participate in school meetings, including leadership teams, to ensure the unique needs of the boarding community are well considered and managed within the school environment

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders in the day school to ensure appropriate academic progress and liaise with parents when required. 

  • Support the boarding community through a visible presence at school events. 

 

FAMILY LIAISON AND STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT

  • Nurture positive ‘partner-based’ relationships with parents, providing information and guidance on the educational and wellbeing objectives and progress of boarders. 

  • Ensure all correspondence distributed to the boarding community is appropriate and adequately reflects the reputation and standards of the school. 

  • With the active involvement of staff, provide a welcoming environment for all visitors to the Boarding House. 

  • Represent the Boarding House and/or school at official and informal functions as required, promoting the positive public image of the school when addressing meetings or forums. 

  • Assist the Head of Boarding with Boarding House tours for prospective boarding families.

BOARDER WELLBEING

  • Ensure appropriate boarder development and social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical wellbeing needs are provided. 

  • Ensure an effectual pastoral care structure is provided to support, extend, and nurture the diverse needs of boarders. 

  • Ensure appropriate routines are maintained in the Boarding House, to support the academic and wellbeing outcomes for boarders. 

  • Maintain high standards of self-regulation with respect to discipline, dress, and general behaviour of boarders. 

  • Always ensure appropriate supervision of boarders in accordance with Boarding house policies and procedures, including during mealtimes and planned activities. 

  • Ensure appropriate medical assistance is provided to boarders in accordance with Boarding House policies and procedures, including the administration of medication and first aid, as required.  

PROGRAMME PLANNING

  • Develop a rich weekend programme of regular high-quality activities, experiences and events for boarders that caters for a wide variety of interests

  • Promote a strong activities environment for boarders to encourage boarders to maximise their health and wellbeing potential

  • Proactively oversee activities for boarders and ensure a regular rhythm of engaging and enriching experiences

  • Manage the roster for all staffing requirements to ensure appropriate cover and academic/activities performed

  • Lead the Duke of Edinburgh programme and ensure it to be successfully implemented in our school

 

EXTRA TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Complete teaching plans on time and to a high standard

  • Ensure that lessons are well prepared, efficiently resources and appropriate to the ability level of the pupils

  • Take CCA activities as allocated based on the school's needs

BASIC QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor's degree or above; Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent

  • A minimum of 2 years' teaching experience

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a middle leadership position 

  • Previous experience of working in a Boarding house

  • First-Aid qualification

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
